Clearwater Marine Aquarium will be hosting our annual Stranding Conference on January 11th and 12th, 2020. Join us on the 11th in the CMA theatre for a lecture series including topics such as Manatee Health Assessment and Monitoring Efforts; drone utilization in marine mammal studies, Marine Mammal Rescue and Recovery Efforts, the value of necropsy, and much more. Join us on the 12th for poster session in the morning followed by focused breakout sessions! Light breakfast, snacks, and lunch provided. We are specifically interested in male alliance formation and intra-alliance social dynamics of this species, but also in life history of females, previously collected kinship data, (also having isotopes and fatty acid samples in stock and available). Announcing a documentary film

I wish to draw your attention to *The Serengeti Rules*, a recently released documentary film on keystone species and trophic cascades. Although the film is not exclusively about marine mammals, a significant part of it focuses on marine mammals and their associated ecosystems in the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. The film comes in two flavors—a longer version (currently showing at various theaters in the United States and abroad) and a shorter television version that showed recently on PBS Nature (https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/the-serengeti-rules-41dfru/) Both versions build on seminal ideas of the late Robert T. Paine by tracing the work of four other scientists who followed in Paine’s footsteps—John Terborgh, Tony Sinclair, Mary Power, and me. This conceptual foundation provides a way of comparing marine mammals with coastal, fresh water, and terrestrial apex predators. Surprisingly, the challenges for their conservation have many overlaps. Although I was featured exclusive in the marine mammal portion of the film, many members of the marine mammal community were involved in the science of this film. I therefore wish to acknowledge the following people; J. F. Palmisano for discovery of the keystone role of sea otters in kelp forest ecosystems; D.F. Doak, M.T. Tinker, and T.M. Williams for discovery of the likely role of killer whale predation in the collapse of sea otters and coastal ecosystems in southwest Alaska; A.M. Dear ΜARMAMers I am delighted to share with you, on behalf of the WWF Greece and the International Committee on Marine Mammal Protected Areas the Proceedings<https://www.fifth.icmmpa.org/blog/conference-proceedings> of the 5th International Conference on Marine Mammal Protected Areas<https://www.fifth.icmmpa.org/blog/conference-proceedings> which was held in Greece in April 2019. The Proceedings give you a comprehensive overview of the 5th ICMMPA and all relevant information. The Proceedings reflect the way this growing community of practice channels efforts, enthusiasm and commitment into practical measures to achieve conservation of marine mammals, with special focus on the Mediterranean Sea and worldwide. Active discussions resulted in recommendations, declarations, and practical guidance on topics ranging from managing fisheries and shipping interactions and sustainable whale-watching within MMPAs, to anthropogenic noise, to threats-based prioritization of management, to getting actively involved in marine spatial planning so as to achieve sustainable development, while providing a strong foundation for marine mammal conservation. We heard stories, exchanged ideas, furthered knowledge, and made commitments to carry the MMPA collaboration and good work forward, for the next decade and beyond. *Interactive introductory distance sampling training* The University of St Andrews has been training people in design and analysis of distance sampling studies for decades. Perhaps you've wanted to attend but could not get permission for travel to Scotland or the scheduling of workshops in August conflicted with your field work. We are offering the training workshop in 10 two-hour blocks in early January. You will be invited to interact in short lectures on distance sampling principles. 👩‍🎓 Exercises analysing data sets in R will reinforce those principles and the lecturer will be available to assist during the practical session via screen sharing. The block will conclude with a summary of the exercise and question/answer session for both lecture and exercise. 💻 The workshop will be delivered using Zoom web conferencing software along with R-Studio "in the cloud"☁️; both free software tools. You will need accounts for both pieces of software. This is a free conference which aims to bring together students interested in marine mammals from across the UK and Ireland. We encourage students to present their work in the form of posters, speed talks and 15 minute slots, along with the opportunity to network. First Call: GIS Training Courses January 2020 - 'An Introduction To Using GIS/QGIS In Biological Research' and 'An Introdution To Species Distribution Modelling In The Marine Environment'

This is the first call for attendees for our upcoming GIS training courses in January 2020. These courses are ‘An Introduction To Using GIS/QGIS In Biological Research’ and ‘An Introduction To Species Distribution Modelling In The Marine Environment’. They will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, between the 27th and 30th of January 2020. 1. An Introduction To Using GIS/QGIS In Biological Research, Glasgow, Scotland, 27th – 28th January 2020: This introductory training course for those who wish to learn how to use GIS in any area of biological research, and it will provide an introduction to using GIS in a wide variety of biological research situations, including marine mammal research, and the course includes two marine-mammal-specific practical exercises (one based around calculating the observed abundance per unit survey effort of dolphins using a grid-based approach, and one based around mapping species richness for North Atlantic beaked whales). It is primarily based around a GIS software package called QGIS, which is free to use. As a result, it is one of the best options for doing GIS for self-employed MMOs, small environmental consultancies, NGOs, those working on small marine mammal research projects with limited budgets for purchasing software licences and students working at universities who do not have access to commercial GIS software packages. This course aimed at both those with no GIS experience, but wish to learn how to do GIS with QGIS, and also those who are familiar with using commercial GIS software, such as ArcGIS, but who wish to learn how to use QGIS as an alternative. However, this course is taught using software-independent approach, and it is also open to those who wish to learn how to use ArcGIS to do biological GIS. The course will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, and it will be taught by Dr Colin D. MacLeod, who has more than 15 years experience in using GIS for a wide variety of biological purposes. For those who cannot attend this course in person, a shorter online course based on the same materials is available from our sister site www.GISforBiologists.com. The course will primarily be based around QGIS (also known as Quantum GIS), which provides a user-friendly, open-source, free alternative to commercial GIS software packages, and it is becoming increasingly widely used in both academic and commercial organisations As a result, it is aimed at both those with no GIS experience, but wish to learn how to do GIS with QGIS, and also those who are familiar with using commercial GIS software, such as ArcGIS, but who wish to learn how to use QGIS as an alternative. In a series of background sessions, case studies and practical exercises, it covers how to create data layers of species distribution, how to select and create raster data layers of environmental variables, such as water depth, how to join information on species distribution to environmental information, how to export data from a GIS project for analysis in a statistical package, such as R, how to create spatial visualisations based on a statistical model and how to validate the spatial predictions of a model. The practical sessions work through a species distribution modelling project based on real marine survey data from start to finish. This course can be done with either QGIS and R (our recommended option) or ArcGIS and R. The practical exercises on this course will be based on those in the recently published ‘An Introduction To Species Distribution Modelling Using QGIS And R (GIS Workbooks Series)’ by Dr MacLeod, and a free copy of this book will be provided to all participants. Attendance will be limited to a maximum of 16 people, and the course will cost £295 per person (£200 for students, the unwaged and those working for registered charities). *Program Description* The IMMS Animal Training Internship Program is designed as a way for students/individuals interested in a career in animal care and training to gain valuable experience in a real-world setting. Interns will primarily be trained in aspects of animal care, but will also participate in other activities at IMMS. Our goal is to give interns a well-rounded experience in a variety of areas while providing expert training and experience. This is an unpaid position and all interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation. Once accepted, IMMS staff will be able to assist interns in suggesting suitable housing and locations. Positions are limited. IMMS reserves the right to end an internship at any time. *Eligibility Requirements* Interns must be: • 18 years or older. • A recent graduate or actively pursuing a college degree in the sciences. • Willing to accept the internship as an unpaid position. • Able to commit to a minimum of at least 12 weeks, 40 hours a week. The internship can be extended depending on work performance. • Available to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays. • Able to lift 50 lbs, work long hours on your feet, and work outside in extreme conditions. • Able to maintain a positive attitude, good work ethic, sense of responsibility, and a strong willingness to learn. • Financially stable enough to obtain housing and transportation, though IMMS staff will do their best to assist you in making arrangements. • Able to comply with IMMS rules and regulations. *Dates:* Term: Deadline to apply: Spring (Feb-April) December 1 Summer (May-Aug) March 1 Fall (Aug-Nov) June 1 Winter (Nov-Feb) September 1 *Duties:* The IMMS animal care and training staff is in charge of caring for Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, and large parrots. Interns will work directly with animal care staff and be exposed to all aspects of the daily routine. Heavy emphasis is placed on basic tasks such as food preparation, and daily cleaning and facility maintenance. Interns will learn how to train animals with operant conditioning through observation and may assist during sessions. Enrichment is very important to the well-being of our animals and interns will be asked to design and implement an enrichment device for our dolphins and/or birds. Interns will also give educational presentation to guests before they interact with our animals, as well as help staff with daily water quality. Because we want interns to have a well rounded experience, they will also be asked to assist in other departments. Interns may participate as 1) environmental educators and assist in giving presentations to the public, 2) research assistants that help with our many wild dolphin based research studies, or 3) emergency responders as IMMS is part of the Southeast Regional Marine Mammal Stranding Network and responds to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles.
