Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Program Fellowship Fellowship summary The Animal Rescue Program (ARP) Fellowship position is an expanded internship. The goal of the program is to provide college students or recent college graduates that are pursuing a career in veterinary medicine an opportunity to expand their animal skills by learning proper techniques for treating marine animals within a rehabilitation setting. The Animal Rescue Program is a department within Mystic Aquarium whose mission is to inspire people to care for and protect our ocean planet through conservation, education, and research. Application deadlines are as follows: Spring fellowship (Jan-May): September 30 Summer fellowship (May-Aug): January 31 Fall fellowship (Sept-Dec): May 31 Demonstrate excellent representation of the aquarium at all times through a positive, can-do attitude and teamwork focused work ethic. The ARP Fellow is responsible for the day-to-day operations and general organization of the Animal Rescue Clinic (ARC) with guidance from ARP staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: diet preparation, cleaning and maintenance of ARP areas, record keeping, and providing medical treatments to animals with guidance from ARP staff and Aquarium veterinarians. Medical treatments may include restraint for procedures, tube feeding, intravenous blood samples, subcutaneous fluids, intramuscular injections, etc. The ARP Fellow will also provide training and guidance to ARP volunteers and interns, as requested. Minimum requirements Must be willing to consistently provide internal and external customer service above and beyond expectation. One of the following degree options is required: a degree from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program, current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program, current undergraduate enrollment (3rd or 4th year) in a pre-veterinary track program, current enrollment (1st or 2nd year) in an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Medicine degree program, or a bachelor's degree with equivalent animal experience to above. Experience working in a veterinary clinic setting is strongly desired. Current valid driver's license required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office. Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and have flexibility, a high attention to detail, strong organization and time management skills, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. Candidate must be able to meet the physical demands of the position which include prolonged standing and kneeling, lifting objects, and working in outdoor conditions. Responsibilities and essential functions All fellowships are unpaid with a minimum 12-16 week commitment required. The position is scheduled five days per week for a minimum of 40 hours each week. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, as hours may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Housing is not provided. To perform this fellowship position successfully, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. Despite scientific evidence of declines in many marine mammal species, bycatch and other impacts are allowed to persist while stakeholders squabble over details and regulations. Targeted application of social science, psychology and marketing techniques may offer an innovative solution to many of these problems. Seeking research assistants in Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia, for a research project to evaluate underwater noise impacts of boats on humpback whales. Project Outline: The research project aims to investigate the underwater noise impacts of whale-watching boats on humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). The project will conduct boat-based controlled exposure experiments using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and digital acoustic recording tags (DTAGs) to measure behavioural responses of whales to the boat. We are seeking volunteers for full-time assistance from August 1st-October 31st 2018 (southern migration of humpback whales). Primary Investigators: Dr Kate R. Sprogis and Prof. Peter T. Madsen. Location: Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia. Exmouth is a small, remote town with limited shops that is ~15hrs drive north of Perth. Exmouth is the town associated with the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park. Duties: Field- behavioural data collection, boat driving, assistance with UAVs (pending previous experience), assistance with D-tagging, assistance with the underwater loudspeaker.  Office- Download of DTAG and UAV data, Data entry, UAV video processing, equipment maintenance, project organisation and logistics. Preferred skills and traits: 1. Completed a degree in biology, marine science, animal behaviour or a related field.  2. Previous field experience with cetaceans (e.g. with underwater acoustics, D-tagging, behavioural field data collection, focal follows, UAV experience). 3. Have boating experience.  4. Be enthusiastic, team oriented and have a positive, mature attitude as well as a genuine interest in wildlife science. Preferred candidates will have experience working well in a small team and in remote locations, are fluent in English, and have experience using computer programs (e.g. MATLAB). Assistants should be adaptable and patient as fieldwork is highly weather dependent (e.g. any day with <15knt winds, including weekends). When the weather permits expect boat days to be long and on consecutive days. On non-field days, data processing will be required. Costs of housing (in a shared research house with 3-4 others) and food will be covered for the research season (3 months). Research assistants will be responsible for their own travel to Exmouth, WA (coach buses and direct flights from Perth are available). New Publication: Spatio-temporal pinniped strandings in the Pacific Northwest

Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the recent publication of the following article in Aquatic Mammals: Spatio-Temporal Characterization of Pinniped Strandings and Human Interaction Cases in the Pacific Northwest, 1991-2016 <https://doi.org/10.1578/AM.44.3.2018.299> Abstract: Pinniped strandings can be used as a proxy to evaluate the impacts of anthropogenic activities on the local marine environment. Stranding data from Oregon and Washington from 1991 to 2016 were used to examine regional and temporal patterns in strandings and human interaction cases across age and sex for six species. Over the study period, 14,729 pinnipeds were reported stranded along the coast in the Pacific Northwest, 11% of which were documented as human interaction cases. Total strandings and the number of reported human interaction cases increased over time for most species. The composition of age and sex classes varied for each species, as did the proportion of strandings identified as human interaction cases. Gunshot wounds and fisheries entanglements were concentrated in clusters along the coast and together constituted the majority of human interaction cases. Stranding and human interaction case hotspots were different across species and varied seasonally, likely due to the distribution of pinnipeds and human activities along the coast. Despite the challenges and uncertainties inherent in using stranding data as an indicator of pinniped health and anthropogenic impacts, modeling spatio-temporal patterns is useful for stranding response practitioners and natural resource managers when evaluating the scope and magnitude of threats to pinniped populations. *CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS **2018 - **CETACEAN MONITORING PROJECT IN THE MACARONESIA **(CETUS Project - Isabel Sousa Pinto)* The Faculty of Sciences from University of Porto (FCUP) / Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) is in its 7th year of cetacean monitoring in Macaronesia aboard cargo ships. This year, routes will be from Continental Portugal (Porto/Lisbon) to Madeira (Caniçal) and Continental Portugal to Azores (Ponta Delgada/Horta/Praia da Vitória). We are seeking for volunteers for the 2018 MMOs team for the following survey periods: 1. End of June to August 2018; 2. End of August to October 2018. *You can either apply for one or two survey periods*. *The internship includes:* - An intensive training on monitoring protocol, cetacean identification and data processing and analysis; - Round-trip sea-surveys departing from Mainland Portugal in the routes stated above; - Free time to visit Mainland Portugal and the Islands; - Accommodation; - Living costs while on-board. The program is based in Porto (Portugal) where volunteers will be welcomed to receive the training in the monitoring protocol and accommodated in-between sea campaigns. Each campaign can last up to 2 months on the same route. Volunteers are in charge of their own travel arrangements and living costs when in land. Trip costs between boarding ports and land accommodation are not covered (a couple of train trips between Porto and Lisbon may be required). We encourage the use of this experience for university reports or internships (given that the course director allows it) or for other scientific results (presentation at conferences, scientific papers, …). Successful applicants should possess or be enrolled in a BS or MS course in biology or related, be reliable, dedicated, adaptable and patient, as this work is highly weather dependent and requires consecutive days of work at sea. Reeves *Highlights* • Effort-weighted study of 'postmortem attentive behaviour' (PAB) in cetaceans. • Dolphins (Delphinidae) accounted for 92.3% of 78 PAB records, baleen whales 1.3%. • Encephalisation was an important predictor of PAB across taxa. • Female PAB towards dead calves (75%) may have been rescue attempts or grieving. • Male PAB was rare and possibly not caregiving. *Abstract* The scientific study of death across animal taxa—comparative thanatology—investigates how animals respond behaviourally, physiologically and psychologically to dead conspecifics, and the processes behind such responses. Several species of cetaceans have been long known to care for, attend to, be aroused by, or show interest in dead or dying individuals. We investigated patterns and variation in cetacean responses to dead conspecifics across cetacean taxa based on a comprehensive literature review. We analysed 78 records reported between 1970 and 2016, involving 20 of the 88 extant cetacean species. We adopted a weighted comparative approach to take observation effort into account and found that odontocetes (toothed cetaceans) were much more likely than mysticetes (baleen whales) to attend to dead conspecifics. Dolphins (Delphinidae) had the greatest occurrence of attentive behaviour (92.3% of all records), with a weighed attendance index 18 times greater than the average of all other cetacean families. Two dolphin genera, *Sousa* and *Tursiops*, constituted 55.1% of all cetacean records (*N* = 43) and showed the highest incidence of attentive behaviour. Results of analyses intended to investigate the reasons behind these differences suggested that encephalisation may be an important predictor, consistent with the "social brain" hypothesis. Among attending individuals or groups of known sex (*N* = 28), the majority (75.0%) were adult females with dead calves or juveniles (possibly their own offspring, with exceptions), consistent with the strong mother-calf bond, or, in a few cases, with the bond between mothers and other females in the group. The remaining records (25.0%) involved males either showing sexual interest in a dead adult or subadult, or carrying a dead calf in the presence of females. Because an inanimate individual is potentially rescuable, responses to dead conspecifics—especially by females—can be explained at least in part by attempts to revive and protect, having a clear adaptive value. In some cases such responses are followed by apparently maladaptive behaviour such as the long-term carrying of, or standing by, a decomposed carcass, similar to observations of certain terrestrial mammals. Among the possible explanations for the observed cetacean behavioural responses to dead conspecifics are strong attachment resulting in a difficulty of "letting go"—possibly related to grieving—or perhaps individuals failing to recognise or accept that an offspring or companion has died. Dear Colleagues With great satisfaction I circulate this key information The Government of Costa Rica has created an exclusion zone for heavy maritime traffic in Golfo Dulce, which complements the provisions adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on the same matter off Osa Peninsula and Nicoya Gulf last June 2017, to mitigate the likelihood of collisions affecting migrating humpback whales, specially mother-calf pairs. At CEIC (Centro de Investigación de Cetáceos Costa Rica),we would like to acknowledge the leadership of Dr. Hector Guzman of Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), in such effort and we are greatly pleased in being part of such a major steps towards the conservation of Humpback Whales in the Eastern Pacific. This course is suitable for anyone working on marine mammal foraging ecology and food webs. Course overview: This course will cover the concepts, technical background and use of stable isotope mixing models (SIMMs) with a particular focus on running them in R. This course will cover the concepts, technical background and use of stable isotope mixing models (SIMMs) with a particular focus on running them in R. Recently SIMMs have become a very popular tool for quantifying food webs and thus the diet of predators and prey in an ecosystem. Starting with only basic understanding of statistical models, we will cover the do’s and don’ts of using SIMMs with a particular focus on the widely used package SIAR and the more advanced MixSIAR. Participants will be taught some of the advanced features of these packages, which will enable them to produce a richer class of output, and are encouraged to bring their own data sets and problems to study during the round-table discussions.
