Cetacean Research Assistant - Portugal 2019 BACKGROUND: The Marine Environment Research Association – AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in Portugal in 2010, focused on the research and conservation of marine species and running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behaviour and social structure of the local cetacean populations. Each year, from the 1st of May until the 31st of October, AIMM operates a Dolphin Research Internship Programme during our summer field season. We receive interns of all ages from across the globe to participate in this programme and are currently looking for applicants to fill two Volunteer Research Assistant positions for the forthcoming field season in 2019. You will be joining a small and dedicated team of scientists and researchers to provide vital support to the ongoing success of our data collection and internship programme. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an environmentally friendly and multicultural environment. Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zTIEQEsftA WHAT WE REQUIRE:Ideal candidates for these two positions will: - be at least 21 years of age - be fluent in English (mandatory) and Portuguese (highly desirable) - have previous experience with cetaceans and/or marine sciences (mandatory) - hold a full, manual Driving License, valid in the EU (mandatory) - have a valid skippers powerboat license and boating experience (highly desirable) - be able to commit to at least 2 months, preference given to those staying the whole field season (6 months: May-October) - have proven experience in team leadership and group supervision - be highly motivated, responsible and organised with a genuine attention to detail - have a friendly, patient and tolerant personality, and be capable of dealing with people from different cultures, beliefs and backgrounds WHAT WE OFFER: The Research Assistants will participate directly in our fieldwork and will receive training and supervision in species identification, research & data collection methods, photo-identification and the use of GPS and camera equipment. In turn, you will be responsible for supervising the interns while conducting surveys in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos, and on the commercial dolphin watching boats. You will also have to ensure that data is collected and entered accurately and according to AIMM's established methodologies. Field days can be long and intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are always fulfilling and good fun! Additionally, you will also receive 3 meals a day and accommodation in AIMM's shared research house with all the other members of the team. Each assistant will be entitled to 1 day off per week when you may explore the local area or simply rest with a good book by the pool! *VOLUNTEERING PROGRAM WITH MARINE MAMMALS IN ECUADOR* *BACKGROUND: *FEMM (Fundación Ecuatoriana para el estudio de Mamíferos Marinos), is a private, non-profit and volunteering organization. We have been working on research and conservation for 30 years to benefit Marine mammals: bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus)* and humpback whales (*Megaptera novaeangliae*) mainly and in recent years with marine-coastal protected areas to preserve their habitats. We need volunteers to help us to support projects and activities related these marine mammals and marine coastal protected areas. The main areas of work are related to research, conservation, sustainable management, environmental education, ecotourism and policies. We expect that volunteers could be involved in conservation, education, administrative, social media/web, and fundraising work and other activities. The volunteers collaborate in the marine mammals researchs in both field work (photo-identification, measure of parameters, gps, collect the behaviour, group size, etc.) and office work (data collection, edition and analyse the data that we got). Beside volunteers help in the networking promotion, fundraising for the research projects and the administrative work. Volunteers will live and work together so they will share accomodation, house tasks different ways of thinking, different cultures and experiences. *WHERE*: Santa Elena and Posorja, Ecuador *WHEN: *The bottlenose dolphins of the area that we study they are always in their habitats so we do field trips during all the year. The humpback whale season is between June and Septembre. First Call: Training Course - An Introduction To Using GIS/QGIS In Biological Research, 18-19 March 2019

This is the first call for attendees for our upcoming introductory training course for those who wish to learn how to use GIS in biological research, and it will provide an introduction to using GIS in a wide variety of biological research situations, including marine mammal research, and the course includes two marine-mammal-specific practical exercises (one based around calculating the observed abundance per unit survey effort of dolphins using a grid-based approach, and one based around mapping species richness for North Atlantic beaked whales). It is primmarily based around a GIS software package called QGIS, which is free to use. As a result, it is one of the best options for doing GIS for self-employed MMOs, small environmental consultancies, NGOs, those working on small marine mammal research projects with limited budgets for purchasing software licences and students working at universities who do not have access to commercial GIS software packages. The course will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, on the 18th and 19th of March 2019, and it will be taught by Dr Colin D. MacLeod, who has more than 15 years experience in using GIS for a wide variety of biological purposes. For those who cannot attend this course in person, a shorter online course based on the same materials is available from our sister site www.GISforBiologists.com. The course will primarily be based around QGIS (also known as Quantum GIS), which provides a user-friendly, open-source, free alternative to commercial GIS software packages, and it is becoming increasingly widely used in both academic and commercial organisations As a result, it is aimed at both those with no GIS experience, but wish to learn how to do GIS with QGIS, and also those who are familiar with using commercial GIS software, such as ArcGIS, but who wish to learn how to use QGIS as an alternative. However, this course is taught using software-independent approach, and it is also open to those who wish to learn how to use ArcGIS to do biological GIS. The practical exercises on this course will be based on those in the recently published GIS For Biologists: A Practical Introduction For Undergraduates by Dr MacLeod, and a free copy of this book will be provided to all participants. Attendance will be limited to a maximum of 16 people, and the course will cost £295 per person (£200 for students, the unwaged and those working for registered charities). Marine mammalogy diversity survey

The Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) has recently created an ad hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion <https://www.marinemammalscience.org/about-us/committees/#diversity>. The first step of the committee is to better understand the demographic composition of the field of marine mammalogy and to solicit ideas for ways that SMM can help make a more diverse and inclusive community. 2019 Fin whale Project Research Assistant and Volunteer Program (Barcelona - Spain)

*EDMAKTUB is looking**for team members and assistants for the 2019 Fin Whale Project on the coast of Barcelona* EDMAKTUB Association is a non-profit organization studying fin whale behaviour and the conditions why fin whales come in great number to feed on the coast between Barcelona and Tarragona. Not only whales but also many other species of cetaceans, sea birds, fish and sea turtles visit the area from mid-February to mid-June. EDMAKTUB collects information about their presence and behavior, as well as biological and oceanographic data. FALKLAND ISLANDS - MARINE MEGAFAUNA - FIELD HELPER NEEDED URGENTLY

PROJECT: Long term study of MARINE MEGAFAUNA of the FALKLAND ISLANDS. POSITION: Volunteer (unpaid) field helper. Only ONE position available. DURATION: about 3 months, end of December 2018 to end of March 2019. BEGIN DATE: Ideally the new field helper should arrive in the Falklands on Saturday 22nd of December, but a small delay (two weeks maximum) could be possible. LOCATION: Sea Lion Island, Falkland Islands, Southern Atlantic Ocean. DUTIES: - Southern elephant seals: counts, mapping, observation of behavior - Killer whales: photoidentification, observation and videotaping of behavior - Falklands skuas: counts, nest identification and mapping, observation of behavior - Raptors: counts, nest identification and mapping, observation of behavior - Marine birds: counts and mapping of different species (different species of penguins, cormorants, gulls, geese, and ducks) - Environmental monitoring: collection of microclimatic data, habitat classification, collection of GIS data DEADLINE: we have an urgent need to fill a gap in our current field helper team , because one of our field helper is leaving earlier than expected DESCRIPTION One volunteer field helper is required for the 2018-2019 field season of various long-term research projects on marine megafauna of the Falkland Islands, carried out by the Elephant Seal Research Group at Sea Lion Island. Previous experience of field work is appreciated but not essential. Applicants are required to pay all expenses to get to Sea Lion Island, and telephone/Internet expenses while there. Accommodation and food at SLI will be provided by the ESRG. The ESRG is a small independent organization, so we are asking volunteers a 300 GBP contribution to help us with management expenses and individual research equipment repair/maintenance. Applicants will be required to work in the field for the whole length of the day, seven days per week, with just an half day of rest per week. Volunteers are required to help with cooking, cleaning of their cabin and general maintenance tasks. The data collection protocol is complex, the field work is physically demanding, and the weather is often not very good. People without a good tolerance to cold are discouraged to apply. It is a very rewarding, but demanding, experience. The island is a wonderful place with large unspoiled sandy beaches, and a very rich and very tame wildlife. It is the best hot spot for wildlife watching in the Falklands, it is an Important Birds Area, a RAMSAR convention site, and a National Nature Reserve.
