The Whale Museum's Soundwatch Boater Education Program: 2017 Summer Vessel Driver Positions Available! The Whale Museum, Friday Harbor, WA Soundwatch is a successful and internationally acclaimed education and monitoring program working to reduce vessel disturbance to orcas and other marine wildlife in the Salish Sea region of Washington State (USA) and British Columbia (Canada). Soundwatch needs drivers to conduct seasonal vessel patrols, educate boaters on regional guidelines and regulations, and collect data while monitoring vessel activities around whales. Data from this critical program characterizes vessel activity trends around endangered orcas and other marine wildlife. The data is used to promote better boater compliance and to inform marine mammal management strategies such as state and federal vessel laws and guidelines. The Soundwatch program is operated by The Whale Museum (TWM), a not-for-profit organization located in Friday harbor on San Juan Island in Washington state. Driver responsibilities Include but are not limited to the following: o Conduct daily on-the-water public education and monitoring of vessel activities from May thru September within the San Juan Country Marine Stewardship Area (including National Wildlife Refuge areas and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Biological Preserve Areas). o Maintain daily boat protocols and data collection procedures on vessels, marine wildlife viewing trends, guideline/federal law compliance measurements, and educational materials distribution. o Prevent wildlife disturbance by intercepting boaters before they reach wildlife areas. o Maintain equipment (including routine boat maintenance and minor boat/engine repairs) o Work with Soundwatch volunteers and interns. o Maintain communications with whale research and commercial whale-watch community. o Report marine mammal strandings to the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network. Applicant requirements: Physically fit (able to lift 40 lbs), must be able to swim, must be able to stand for long periods of time, and be familiar with field data collection. Drivers will need a valid US passport or an enhanced driver's license, CPR/First Aid certification, a state boater license/or equivalent safe boating card and previous boat driving experience. Field days typically exceed eight hours and occur at least three or four times a week. Internship is located in Friday Harbor, Washington. This position provides a housing stipend. Interns are responsible for finding their own housing and having a mode of transportation. Once accepted, TWM staff will be able to assist Interns in suggesting suitable housing options and locations. Whale Museum Summer Internships - 2017 The San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network (SJCMMSN), a program of The Whale Museum established in 1980, is authorized by NMFS to respond to all marine mammal strandings in San Juan County, WA. We typically respond to more than 200 calls of both live and deceased animals per year. SJCMMSN is currently recruiting a San Juan Island-based intern to help respond to marine mammal strandings during our busy season. Interns and volunteers of this critical program serve as ambassadors between humans and marine mammals as well as contribute scientific data that is crucial to both human and animal health. Internship is based in Friday Harbor, WA and requires approximately 35-40 hours per week from June-August. Schedule may vary and involve "on call" time. There will be a variety of tasks both in the field and in an office setting. Intern will receive a small stipend. Housing is not provided, but shared housing at a reasonable cost is likely available. KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assist with stranding response including: conducting health assessments of live seal pups in the field; tagging harbor seals that are not collected for rehabilitation; transferring harassed or injured pups to a local rehabilitation center; conducting Level A examinations of dead marine mammals * Perform first mate duties on board The Whale Museum's stranding boat, the R/V Buzzard * Assist with necropsies of fresh dead marine mammals including: transferring carcasses to the lab space; preparing, setting-up, and taking down necropsy supplies; organizing and archiving biological samples * Assist with data entry and analysis for SJCMMSN as well as The Whale Museum's marine mammal sightings network REQUIREMENTS: At least 18 years of age, physically fit (able to lift 40 lbs), possess a valid US driver's license. New publication: Blubber transcriptome response to acute stress axis activation involved transient changes in adipogenesis and lipolysis in a fasting-adapted marine mammal (Jane Khudyakov) Dear colleagues, We would like to announce the publication of the following paper in Scientific Reports: Khudyakov J. (2017) Blubber transcriptome response to acute stress axis activation involves transient changes in adipogenesis and lipolysis in a fasting-adapted marine mammal. *Sci. Rep.* 7, 42110; doi: 10.1038/srep42110. Abstract Stress can compromise an animal’s ability to conserve metabolic stores and participate in energy-demanding activities that are critical for fitness. Understanding how wild animals, especially those already experiencing physiological extremes (e.g. fasting), regulate stress responses is critical for evaluating the impacts of anthropogenic disturbance on physiology and fitness, key challenges for conservation. However, studies of stress in wildlife are often limited to baseline endocrine measurements and few have investigated stress effects in fasting-adapted species. We examined downstream molecular consequences of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation by exogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in blubber of northern elephant seals due to the ease of blubber sampling and its key role in metabolic regulation in marine mammals. We report the first phocid blubber transcriptome produced by RNAseq, containing over 140,000 annotated transcripts, including metabolic and adipocytokine genes of interest. The acute response of blubber to stress axis activation, measured 2 hours after ACTH administration, involved highly specific, transient (lasting <24 hours) induction of gene networks that promote lipolysis and adipogenesis in mammalian adipocytes. Differentially expressed genes included key adipogenesis factors which can be used as blubber-specific markers of acute stress in marine mammals of concern for which sampling of other tissues is not possible. Through presentations and workshop panel discussions, possible best management practices for preventing, reducing, and monitoring effects to Atlantic marine protected species will be identified. Time-frequency measurements of data from passive acoustic monitoring devices are evaluated as images. Vocalization spectrograms are preprocessed for noise reduction and tone removal. First stage of the algorithm eliminates non-upcalls by an energy detection algorithm. In the second stage, two sets of features are extracted from the remaining signals using contour-based and texture based methods. The former is based on extraction of time–frequency features from upcall contours, and the latter employs a Local Binary Pattern operator to extract distinguishing texture features of the upcalls. Subsequently evaluation phase is carried out by using several classifiers to assess the effectiveness of both the contour-based and texture-based features for upcall detection. Comparing ROC curves of machine learning algorithms obtained from Cornell University’s dataset reveals that LBP features improved performance accuracy up to 43% over time–frequency features. Abstract: Assessment of the impact of noise over-exposure in stranded cetaceans is challenging, as the lesions that lead to hearing loss occur at the cellular level and inner ear cells are very sensitive to autolysis. Distinguishing ante-mortem pathology from post-mortem change has been a major constraint in diagnosing potential impact. Here, we outline a methodology applicable to the detection of noise-induced hearing loss in stranded cetaceans. Inner ears from two mass strandings of long-finned pilot whales in Scotland were processed for scanning electron microscopy observation. In one case, a juvenile animal, whose ears were fixed within 4 hours of death, revealed that many sensory cells at the apex of the cochlear spiral were missing. In this case, the absence of outer hair cells would be compatible with overexposure to underwater noise, affecting the region which transduces the lowest frequencies of the pilot whales hearing spectrum. Perfusion of cochlea with fixative greatly improved preservation and enabled diagnostic imaging of the organ of Corti, even 30 hours after death. This finding supports adopting a routine protocol to detect the pathological legacy of noise overexposure in mass stranded cetaceans as a key to understanding the complex processes and implications that lie behind such stranding events. Dear Colleagues The journal Endangered Species Research has become a major venue for publication of marine mammal literature. Our opening ISI Impact Factor was 1.3 last year. I expect this will rise quickly now, with a value of 1.5-2.0 for this year. We have recently hosted a special issue of 20 papers on the Effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on protected marine species http://www.int-res.com/abstracts/esr/v33/ and have another one underway on 21st century paradigms for measuring and managing the effects of anthropogenic ocean noise In total, 19 and 26 quality papers on marine mammals were published in each of 2015 and 2016, respectively. The 22nd Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Halifax, Nova Scotia (October 22-27, 2017) has opportunities available for more volunteers.
