Ecosphere 8(1):e01641. 10.1002/ecs2.1641 *http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ecs2.1641/full <http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ecs2.1641/full>* Abstract: The rigorous program of monitoring humpback whales (*Megaptera novaeangliae*), implemented by Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in 1985, augmented by additional data collected in southeastern Alaska since 1968, constitutes one of the longest studies of living whales in the world. This monitoring program, now a National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring Program Vital Sign, employed consistent methods for summer surveys from 1985 to 2014 to document the number of whales and gather longitudinal records on individuals in Glacier Bay and Icy Strait. Survey effort averaged 355.4 h/yr (SD = 45.8), resulting in 9485 encounters with 662 individual whales, including 276 calves. The population increased at a rate of 5.1%/yr, from 41 individuals in 1985 to 239 individuals in 2013, primarily due to long-term site ﬁdelity and local recruitment. We documented sighting histories of >30 yr in southeastern Alaska, for 54 whales, including one 45-yr sighting history. Almost half of the whales ﬁrst identiﬁed as calves returned in subsequent years, at a mean age of 3.2 yr (SE = 0.28, range = 1–17 yr). Over 75% of females had their ﬁrst calf by age 13. The maximum female reproductive span was 32 yr, and the maximum number of calves was 11. We estimated mean effective calving rate with a simple ratio and used logistic regression to estimate calving probability. Both methods resulted in similar maximal estimates that were somewhat lower than previously published values for this species: 0.324 (95% CL: 0.28–0.36) calves/ female / yr vs. calving probability of 0.319 (95% CL: 0.29–0.35). Minimal estimates, in which the ﬁrst calf of each known-aged female was omitted, were 0.302 (95% CL: 0.27–0.34) calves/mature female / yr vs. calving probability of 0.305 (95% CL: 0.27–0.34) calves/mature female/ yr. This monitoring program has guided Park management actions and documented this once critically endangered population’s trajectory toward recovery, often through collaboration with other agencies and organizations, fostering the continued protection and understanding of this distinctive species. Our ﬁndings highlight the value of marine protected areas for migratory species with strong seasonal site ﬁdelity and the role of long-term monitoring in interpreting population-level responses to changing marine ecosystems. *Summer 2017 Marine Mammal Research Internship* The IMMS Research Internship Program located in Gulfport, MS is designed as a way for students interested in a career in marine science to gain valuable research experience in a real-world setting. Interns will participate with multiple projects involving bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles and diamondback terrapins. As an intern, you will be trained in all aspects of dolphin photo-id research, sea turtle satellite tracking, and other current research projects at IMMS. Interns will also participate in other operations at IMMS including stranding response, education, and animal care. Our goal is to give Interns a well-rounded experience in a variety of areas while providing expert training and experience in marine science research. Interns must: - Commit to a minimum of at least 12 weeks. The internship can be extended depending on work performance. - Be available to work Mon-Fri and must be available for all boat trips. Some field days may fall on the weekends. - Have strong sense of responsibility, work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to admit mistakes. - Produce high quality research efforts and exhibit strong interpersonal skills. - *Principle Duties include*: data entry, searching and cataloging journal articles, learning all research protocols, cropping and sorting photo-id fin images, learning to use photo-id programs such as Darwin (fin matching software), and FinBase (Microsoft Access), boat based field research (21’ and 31’ boats), and learn how to use ArcGIS - *Secondary Duties involve*: Assisting with animal care staff, attending marine mammal necropsies, responding to marine mammal and sea turtle strandings, and assisting with educational tours. - *Field days: *Interns must be able to spend many hours on the water and on shore in sometimes extreme seasonal conditions. Seasonal temperatures range from over 100 °F in summer to 30 °F in winter. Field days typically exceed eight hours and occur at least two or three times a week. Applicants must be 18 or older and must have a genuine interest in marine research. Applicants should be actively pursuing a college degree or be a recent graduate in oceanography, marine science/biology, biology, or a related field. Humpback Whale and Sea Turtle Research Internship Opportunity in TCI

Humpback Whale and Sea Turtle Research In TCI! Humpback Whale Field Intensive Program in Turks and Caicos with the Marine and Coastal Ecology Research Center (MCERC) (and turtle ecology too!) MCERC is partering with Salt Cay Divers <http://www.saltcaydivers.tc/> for week-long sessions available between January 03- the end of March, 2017. Each week is limited to 4 spots and may be used as internship experience (for those desiring to use this opportunity as a CV builder). There is the likelihood of snorkeling with Humpback Whales (*Megaptera novaeangliae*) during each session as we evaluate the in-water program in the local whale watching industry. We are inviting people to join us for our research program where we are initiating a multi-year study of Humpback Whales (*Megaptera novaeangliae*) and the tourism industry, collect images for photo-ID to contribute to the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog, and examine other questions related to seasonal occurrence patterns. The program will be incorporated into the snorkeling and boat whale watching programs to study the impact of a growing industry. Participants in the program sessions will be collecting data under the guidance of a team of four research assistants. The sessions are Saturday through Saturday on Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos (TCI). Saturday and Sunday are free days to take advantage of activities available on Salt Cay, including diving, snorkeling, swimming, and beach walking on this beautiful island. Monday through Friday we will be on the water for whale watching trips with Salt Cay Divers, and snorkeling with Humpback Whales (when weather and the behavior of whales permits) while we collect data to answer specific questions. You will be an active part of the team collecting behavioral data, acoustic data of singing Humpback Whales, and locating groups of whales using directional hydrophones. This project is supporting the newly developing regulations for TCI’s Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA). We will be collecting data on all cetacean species off TCI during boat trips. Each day we will conduct roundtable discussions over peer reviewed publications. We will learn Humpback Whale ecology and evolutionary biology, incorporating policy, law, and conservation into the discussions. You will be instructed in software programs related to acoustic data analysis and matching fluke patterns. We will also collect data on other cetaceans off TCI, creating catalogs from our images and images shared by the local businesses. We will include free diving, snorkeling, and beach walks aimed at collecting data for DEMA’s long term turtle ecology study, effectively extending their research to the smaller islands. Participants will be attending the open discussions for TCI’s residents and tourists aimed at offering education outreach programs in support of local businesses. The cost of this program is $900USD/week and covers three meals a day, a place to sleep, boat excursions Monday through Friday, and the field intensive curriculum. Bring your own snorkel gear for Saturday and Sunday or rent from Salt Cay Divers to take full advantage of your time on the island. The program fee does not include travel to and from Salt Cay, TCI. DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL

*BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other psecies such as minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an environmental friendly and multicultural environment. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from May 1 - October 31, 2017. The minimum internship attendance is 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos, or in opportunistic platforms (commercial dolphin-watching boats). Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions and seat availability in the dolphin-watching boats. Field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. BOEM's Office of Renewable Energy Programs is hosting a three-day "Best Management Practices Workshop for Atlantic Offshore Wind Facilities" on March 7-9. The workshop will discuss best management practices for preventing, reducing, and monitoring impacts to marine protected species from the development of offshore wind on the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf.
