All MMO/PAMOs must have previous seismic experience, all relevant and up-to-date medical and offshore safety certificates to work in European waters, and must be available to mobilise immediately for durations >30 days, possibly longer. A full, clean driving licence is required for some positions. Prior experience operating a CTD and water sampling equipment is also desirable for some positions, but not a prerequisite, since training will be provided. Please note, this advertisement is for European waters. If you are not able currently to work in Europe, please do not apply. Preference will be given to observers that can mobilise quickly. New publication on whistle comparison of delphinid species in Southeastern Brazil

Hello MarMam community, We are pleased to announce our new publication: Whistle comparison of four delphinid species in Southeastern Brazil, published online in JASA Express Letters: Lima, I.M.S; Andrade, L.G; Bittencourt, L.; Bisi, T.L.; Flach, L.; Lailson-Brito Jr., J.; Azevedo, A.F. Abstract: The present study evaluates variations in frequency and duration parameters of whistles of four dolphin species (Sotalia guianensis, Steno bredanensis, Stenella frontalis, and Tursiops truncatus), recorded in the Rio de Janeiro State Coast, Southeastern Brazil. A total of 487 whistles were analyzed. Acoustic parameters of the whistles were classified to species by discriminant function analysis. Overall classification score was 72.5%, with the highest classification score obtained for whistles of S. bredanensis and the lowest obtained for S. frontalis. Most differences were among S. bredanensis and S. guianensis, species that did not have their repertoires compared in other studies. JOB OPPORTUNITY WITH MARNE ANIMAL RESCUE SPECIALISTS Marine Animal Rescue Specialists (MAR) is authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service for pinniped and dolphin rescues along with whale dis-entanglement calls. Over the past two decades MAR has conducted 4,500 marine mammal rescues. In 2015, MAR rescued 495 marine mammals. POSITION: MARINE ANIMAL RESCUE SPECIALIST LOCATION: MAR’s authorized territory is Los Angeles County from Pacific Palisades to Long Beach and west to Catalina, California. New Publication: New genetic data extend the range of river dolphins Inia in the Amazon Delta

New genetic data extend the range of river dolphins *Inia* in the Amazon Delta. Hydrobiologia. DOI 10.1007/s10750-016-2794-7 Abstract: Geographic distribution is basic information on the biology for any species. However, the precise data on spatial limits of species are unavailable for most taxa, but knowledge of such data is essential for their conservation and monitoring. We report the northernmost records of *Inia araguaiaensis*, a newly described river dolphin that occurs in the Araguaia and Tocantins Rivers, in central-eastern Brazil. Three stranded specimens were collected in Marajó Bay area and were identified as *I. araguaiaensis* based on mitochondrial DNA analysis. We assume that these records represent not only a range expansion of nearly 500 km north from the previous known limit of *I. araguaiaensis*, but also a potential evidence on species-level responses to changes in habitat, as a result of adaptability to variable environmental conditions. These new records based on stranded animals reveal the importance of sampling effort in remote areas, such as coastal waters of the Amazon estuary ecosystem, and help to establish the actual distribution limits of this aquatic mammal for conservation purposes. In particular I encourage you to submit an abstract to a session linking oceanographic processes to the physical and biological patchiness that dominates the distribution and behaviour of marine mammals and other marine vertebrates. RESCUE/STRANDING DEPARTMENT INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT - 2016 The Rescue Department of The Marine Mammal Center is seeking applicants for internships working with stranded pinnipeds, cetaceans and sea otters. These positions are unpaid. Internship Opportunities are available at the following locations. · San Luis Obispo Operations in Morro Bay · Monterey Bay Operations in Moss Landing · Main Hospital in Sausalito Program Description: The Rescue Department Internship is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are interested in increasing their experience and knowledge of marine mammal behavior and the Marine Mammal Stranding Network. Interns will be responsible for answering the animal hotline and rotating the after-hours on-call. Interns will coordinate rescue and triage response throughout the Center's over 600-mile rescue range. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in marine mammal rescues, releases and other field responses as available. In addition, interns will be required to assist in other departments and with animal care duties (feed preparations, medical charting, and pen cleaning) for on-site pinnipeds. Other duties may include: participation in training classes, data entry and tracking, maintaining rescue equipment and assorted miscellaneous tasks. Intern Responsibilities & Qualifications: The internship is open to all applicants 21 years of age or older, with an avid interest in marine biology, zoology, general biology, policy or a related field. If the intern intends to receive university credit for their internship, they are responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institution. Interns must be able to work for a minimum of 3 months, 5 days a week, at least 40 hours per week. Work schedule must be flexible and may include weekends and holidays. This is an unpaid position and all interns are responsible for obtaining housing and transportation. Applicants should demonstrate excellent communication skills and have practical computer knowledge with programs such as Word, Access, and Excel. This internship position involves a fair amount of physical activity, such as: lifting, restraining and moving animals. JOB ADVERT: Project Manager, Inshore Cetaceans of the Falkland Islands Research

Project Manager Dolphins of the kelp: Data priorities for Falklands inshore cetaceans SAERI, Stanley, Falkland Islands The South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI) is seeking to recruitment a Project Manager for a 2-year funded research programme on the inshore cetaceans of the Falkland Islands, South Atlantic. This is an exciting opportunity to initiate the first large programme of cetacean research in the Falklands, collect the first in-depth data and by project end to potentially identify, guide and influence future research priorities in the region. Twenty-five species of cetacean have been recorded within the Falkland Islands and there is a seasonal inshore occurrence of sei whale, however the project will primarily focus on Commerson's dolphins and Peale's dolphins. The Falklands near-shore waters host a unique community of Commerson's and Peale's dolphins that exhibit a sympatric co-occurrence and apparent year-round reliance on coastal kelp forests. Despite both species being recognised as of conservation concern relatively little is known about their populations or biology and hence vulnerability to anthropogenic threats. This lack of data on which to base management decisions has been recognised as a major threat to effective conservation and restricts inclusion into on-going national spatial planning initiatives. The aim of the project is to establish baseline data on the abundance, distribution, natural history and genetic diversity of the Falklands inshore cetacean populations to provide a scientific basis for conservation and ecosystem-based marine management initiatives. This position will co-ordinate the Darwin-Plus funded 'Dolphins of the kelp: Data priorities for Falklands inshore cetaceans'. A project which is being delivered by SAERI in collaboration with 5 partner organisations: Falklands Conservation, Austral Biodiversity Ltd, Shallow Marine Surveys Group (SMSG), Oregon State University and University of St. Andrews.
