Hello, I was hoping you might be able to include a post about our ZWE Symposium at Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine happening at the end of this month, April 25th - 26th, 2015. My co-authors and I are pleased to share our new publication in Marine Mammal Science: "Postnatal development of franciscana’s (*Pontoporia blainvillei*) biosonar relevant structures with potential implications for function, life history, and bycatch" http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mms.12211/abstract Guilherme Frainer, Stefan Huggenberger and Ignacio B. Moreno Abstract Franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) are the most endangered species of the western South Atlantic Ocean. The major cause of their vulnerability is incidental bycatch in fishery gill nets. Ontogenetic changes of biosonar relevant structures in Pontoporia were analyzed in five specimens (one female neonate, two male neonates and two male adults) using digital imaging technology (MRI, CT) and macroscopic dissections to compare structures involved in sound production and reception. These data were compared to an ontogenetic series of 69 macerated skulls of Pontoporia in order to elucidate the correlation between soft tissue structures and bones of the epicranial complex and to describe the development-related changes in the mandible. Postnatal developmental shape changes of the posterior part of the right vestibular air sac followed bone formation and the melon with its right branch elongated, paralleling the flatter facial depression of adults. Minor postnatal developmental modifi- cations were verified in the tympano-periotic complex but a shape change of the mandible was visible by a ventral deviation of the posterior part of the mandible in adults. These results reveal postnatal changes in allometry and shape of biosonar relevant structures that may be one of the causes that increase bycatch of neonate and young Pontoporia individuals. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center Summer Internship

The Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center in Cape May, New Jersey is looking for interns for our 2015 field season. The season runs from April to mid-November. At the height of our season there are three trips a day with an extremely flexible intern schedule, customized to work around outside employment and summer classes. Intern tasks include: · Photographing marine mammals on whale and dolphin watching trips · GPS/Data collection and processing · Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin fin matching and analyzing · Leading a touch tank demonstration · Maintenance of collected local species tanks · Educating passengers · Creating an independent project Application Process: To apply, please submit a complete application package which includes: · Cover Letter and Resume (no more than 3 pages) · Contact information for two references including email and phone numbers · A supporting document of no more than 500 words answering ONE of the following: 1. In 1998, the United States sought and received International Maritime Organization-endorsement of two Mandatory Ship Reporting (MSR) systems designed to improve mariner awareness about averting ship collisions with the endangered North Atlantic right whale (*Eubalaena glacialis*). Vessel collisions are a serious threat to the right whale and the program was among the first formal attempts to reduce this threat. Under the provisions of the MSR, all ships >300 gross tons are required to report their location, speed, and destination to a shore-based station when entering two key right whale habitats: one in waters off New England and one off coastal Georgia and Florida. In return, reporting ships receive an automatically-generated message, delivered directly to the ship’s bridge, that provides information about right whale vulnerability to vessel collisions and actions mariners can take to avoid collisions. The MSR has been in operation continuously from July 1999 to the present. Archived incoming reports provided a 15-plus year history of ship operations in these two locations. We analyzed a total of 26,772 incoming MSR messages logged between July 1999 and December 2013. Most ships that were required to report did so, and compliance rates were generally constant throughout the study period. Self-reported vessel speeds when entering the systems indicated that most ships traveled between 10 and 16 (range = 5–20 +) knots. Ship speeds generally decreased in 2009 to 2013 following implementation of vessel speed restrictions. The number of reports into the southern system remained relatively constant following a steady increase through 2007, but numbers in the northern system decreased annually beginning in 2008. If reporting is indicative of long-term patterns in shipping operations, it reflects noteworthy changes in marine transportation. Observed declines in ship traffic are likely attributable to the 2008–2009 economic recession, the containerized shipping industry making increased use of larger ships that made fewer trips, and diminished oil/gas US imports as previously inaccessible domestic deposits were exploited. Recent declines in shipping activity likely resulted in lowered collision risks for right whales and reduced their exposure to underwater noise from ships.

MARMAMS at night

Marine mammals face special challenges at night and while sleeping during the day. Given the difficulties of studying natural behavior, there are few studies of nighttime behavior in marine mammals. I have some personal experience with around-the-clock care in rescue situations but would like to poll the list for any favorite publications, notes or personal experiences you've had with nighttime behavior in cetaceans or sirenians.
