Cheers Andy Lowther Research Scientist - Biodiversity The Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway invites applications for a position as research scientist in biodiversity. The work will be conducted in the Section of Biodiversity in our Research Department. The position is temporary for a period of 1,5 years with a possible extension of 1 year, depending on funding. Work Content The successful candidate will work within the Biodiversity Programme on fine-scale dietary analyses of pygoscelid penguins and seals in the sub Antarctic in relation to krill fishing and climate change. The sample collections (in-hand) are from the South Orkneys Islands in the western South Atlantic (2013/2014). Samples from Bouvetøya in the eastern South Atlantic will be collected this coming austral summer (2014/2015). It is expected that sampling will also be done in the planned extension period of this programme in both locations during 2015/2016. The diet study will be part of a larger effort that involves tracking data, accelerometer-magnetometer records, habitat utilization and relationships between predators and krill-fishing effort. The candidate will be integrated into project elements beyond purely dietary assessments, dependent on the skill set(s) that he/she brings to the programme. The results of the studies are expected to be published in a timely fashion in international journals. Qualifications Candidates must hold a completed PhD in animal ecology. We are seeking a candidate who has a solid background in biology with direct research experience dealing with predator dietary analyses (FAs, isotopes, qPCR, scat analyses etc.). The candidate must have good skills in Excel, Access, R programming and multivariate statistics. Research experience dealing with marine predator diving and spatial data and a good publication record (according to career stage) will be considered an asset. Field experience is desirable. We are looking for a positive, highly motivated, adaptable candidate with good collaborations skills. Good written and spoken communication skills in English are required. General The work place is the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway. The project is part of a bilateral research effort between Norway and the United Kingdom (British Antarctic Survey). The salary will be commensurate with the qualifications of the successful candidate, under the Norwegian state salary code 1109, scale 57-64 (currently 482,800-549,400 NOK per year). Dear all, We are looking for potential contributors for a session titled "Seabirds as Prey: Top-down control of seabird colony, population, and foraging dynamics" for the 2nd World Seabird Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, October 2015. We hope that contributions will include a broad range of seabird predators at sea (teleost fishes to sharks and marine mammals) and on land (skuas and eagles to pinnipeds and polar bears). The potential impact of top-down regulation in seabird ecology and population dynamics, however, remains understudied. Furthermore, the recovery of native predator populations following decades of suppression is exerting previously unobserved pressures on seabird populations. Important questions regarding to what extent some seabird populations may be shifting from bottom-up to top-down control and whether ecological principals of trophic cascades or meso-predator release apply to food webs involving seabirds. This symposium will focus on the interactions of seabirds and seabird predators (primarily, but not exclusively, native predators) and the degree to which top-down control is impacting seabird colony, population, and foraging dynamics. Micro- to macro-scale perspectives could range from top-down effects on foraging behavior at sea to impacts on reproduction and redistribution of breeding colonies. Seeking research assistants for the Cetacean Research Unit, Western Australia commencing October 15th, 2014. Program: The South West Marine Research program is a long-term, multi-faceted project on the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins of South West Australia. This program is based in Bunbury (south of Perth) and is a collaboration between Murdoch University Cetacean Research Unit (www.mucru.org<http://www.mucru.org/>) and numerous industry and non-profit partners. The research focuses on dolphin population dynamics, abundance, social structure and behaviour, habitat use, conservation genetics and foraging ecology. http://mucru.org/our-research/research-projects/south-west-marine-research-… Position: Here, I am specifically seeking research volunteers to assist with data collection and processing from October 15th, 2014. Long-term data will be used to investigate population dynamics and habitat use, in order to aid in future conservation and management efforts. Fieldwork is conducted from Busselton to Binningup within a 540 km2 area consisting of coastal beaches, inshore bays, estuarine inlets and a river. Using a rigid sampling design, this research is conducted year round via standardised line transect surveys (up to 5 nm offshore) from a small research vessel. Enrolled in or completed a degree in biology, marine science, animal behaviour or a related field. 2. Previous field experience with wildlife (field data collection, photo-identification, boat handling skills). 3. ACS - SF BAY Guidelines for Student Research Grant: The San Francisco Bay American Cetacean Society chapter Grants-in-Aid of Research fund offers small research grants for direct costs of scientific, field-based projects focusing on cetaceans. The Society invites proposals from all cetacean-related disciplines, including the social sciences, which focus on cetaceans and/or their habitats. SF Bay ACS chapter particularly welcomes applications from early-career researchers such as graduate students and researchers with less than 10 years’ post-doctoral experience, and researchers whose work focuses on small cetaceans in Northern California, with emphasis in the Bay Area. The SF Bay American Cetacean Society chapter has a long-standing commitment to providing young scientists with ‘seed money’ for research projects in cetacean-related disciplines. Currently, SF Bay ACS chapter grant awards range from $100 to $1,000; the Society highly encourages funds to be used in a ‘match’ program to maximize funding potential. Funding is available to applicants who are themselves active (dues-paying) SF Bay ACS chapter members or whose faculty advisers are active members. SF Bay ACS chapter funds are intended to strengthen conservation efforts through applied field-based research and opportunities outside of the laboratory. Plön A systematic health assessment of Indian Ocean bottlenose (Tursiops aduncus) and Indo-Pacific humpback (Sousa plumbea) dolphins incidentally caught in shark nets off the KwaZulu-Natal coast, South Africa. PLoS ONE 9(9): e0107038. DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0107038 Abstract Coastal dolphins are regarded as indicators of changes in coastal marine ecosystem health that could impact humans utilizing the marine environment for food or recreation. Necropsy and histology examinations were performed on 35 Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) and five Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa plumbea) incidentally caught in shark nets off the KwaZulu-Natal coast, South Africa, between 2010 and 2012. Parasitic lesions included pneumonia (85%), abdominal and thoracic serositis (75%), gastroenteritis (70%), hepatitis (62%), and endometritis (42%). Parasitic species identified were Halocercus sp. (lung), Crassicauda sp. (skeletal muscle) and Xenobalanus globicipitis (skin). Additional findings included bronchiolar epithelial mineralisation (83%), splenic filamentous tags (45%), non-suppurative meningoencephalitis (39%), and myocardial fibrosis (26%). No immunohistochemically positive reaction was present in lesions suggestive of dolphin morbillivirus, Toxoplasma gondii and Brucella spp. The first confirmed cases of lobomycosis and sarcocystosis in South African dolphins were documented. Most lesions were mild, and all animals were considered to be in good nutritional condition, based on blubber thickness and muscle mass. Apparent temporal changes in parasitic disease prevalence may indicate a change in the host/parasite interface. This study provided valuable baseline information on conditions affecting coastal dolphin populations in South Africa and, to our knowledge, constitutes the first reported systematic health assessment in incidentally caught dolphins in the Southern Hemisphere. Further research on temporal disease trends as well as disease pathophysiology and anthropogenic factors affecting these populations is needed. New publication on signature whistles in wild bottlenose dolphins (T. truncatus)

Dear colleagues, we are pleased to announce the publication of our recent paper: Kriesell HJ, Elwen SH, Nastasi A, Gridley T (2014): _Identification and Characteristics of Signature Whistles in Wild Bottlenose Dolphins (/Tursiops truncatus/__) from Namibia_. PLoS ONE 9(9): e106317. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0106317 Abstract: A signature whistle type is a learned, individually distinctive whistle type in a dolphin's acoustic repertoire that broadcasts the identity of the whistle owner. The acquisition and use of signature whistles indicates complex cognitive functioning that requires wider investigation in wild dolphin populations. Here we identify signature whistle types from a population of approximately 100 wild common bottlenose dolphins (/Tursiops truncatus/) inhabiting Walvis Bay, and describe signature whistle occurrence, acoustic parameters and temporal production. A catalogue of 43 repeatedly emitted whistle types (REWTs) was generated by analysing 79 hrs of acoustic recordings. From this, 28 signature whistle types were identified using a method based on the temporal patterns in whistle sequences. A visual classification task conducted by 5 naïve judges showed high levels of agreement in classification of whistles (Fleiss-Kappa statistic, ? = 0.848,/Z/= 55.3,/P/<0.001) and supported our categorisation. Signature whistle structure remained stable over time and location, with most types (82%) recorded in 2 or more years, and 4 identified at Walvis Bay and a second field site approximately 450 km away. Whistle acoustic parameters were consistent with those of signature whistles documented in Sarasota Bay (Florida, USA). We provide evidence of possible two-voice signature whistle production by a common bottlenose dolphin. Although signature whistle types have potential use as a marker for studying individual habitat use, we only identified approximately 28% of those from the Walvis Bay population, despite considerable recording effort. We found that signature whistle type diversity was higher in larger dolphin groups and groups with calves present. This is the first study describing signature whistles in a wild free-ranging/T. truncatus/population inhabiting African waters and it provides a baseline on which more in depth behavioural studies can be based. Act as primary staff member responsible for coordination and preparation of Science Panel or Advisory Panel meetings - includes being the point person for SP or AP members, preparing documents, and meeting notes for the panel. . Staff board, science panel, advisory panel and other NPRB committees and attend meetings as requested; take notes and prepare meeting summaries. . Coordinate development and processing of subaward agreements with academic and private agencies and Memoranda of Understanding with federal agencies for new research projects; process requests for extensions. . Supervise Special Project Coordinators (e.g., Assistant Program Manager) or other junior staff, as assigned. . Provide information to refresh NPRB website. . Help prepare biennial and other reports on NPRB programs. . Provide liaison and coordination with other entities performing marine research off Alaska. . Perform other related duties as assigned by the NPRB Science Director. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: . Considerable skill and experience in research administration, planning, and coordination, including ability to plan research projects and programs relevant to marine resource management and adaptive management strategies. . General knowledge of data analysis, graphics preparation, and statistical procedures with respect to the biological and oceanographic sciences. . Advanced writing and communications skills. . Ability to successfully publish research in peer reviewed journals and record of peer reviewing technical documents written by others. . Proven communication and interpersonal skills; must be able to communicate effectively, internally and externally, to multiple audiences. . Considerable ability as a manager, leader, and facilitator, including the ability to build teams and motivate, influence, and develop capacity in others. . A record of successful accomplishment with a particular emphasis on planning and oversight of marine research having natural resource management applications. . Ability to work effectively and partner with key government, private, and academic institutions including partners in federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and fisheries, oil and gas, tourism, and other marine industry organizations. . Ability to work with confidential information. Minimum Qualifications: A Master of Science degree in biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries, oceanography, or a closely related field, and three years of professional experience at the journeyman level (equivalent to an NPRB Special Projects Coordinator) in biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries, oceanography, or a closely related field. Desired Qualifications: Two or more years of experience planning and overseeing multi-disciplinary marine research programs.
