Dear MARMAM readers, The Cetacean Ecology, Behaviour and Evolution Lab (CEBEL<http://www.cebel.org.au>) at the School of Biological Sciences, Flinders University (South Australia)<http://www.flinders.edu.au/science_engineering/biology/>, is currently seeking applications from highly qualified candidates for a PhD project looking at interspecific interactions between sympatric inshore dolphins in Western Australia. This project is part of a collaborative research program between CEBEL<http://www.cebel.org.au/> and Murdoch University Cetacean Research Unit (MUCRU<http://www.mucru.org/>) which is aimed at enhancing our understanding of natural populations of inshore dolphins off the North West Cape, Exmouth, Western Australia and using this knowledge to improve the scientific basis behind their conservation and management. The PhD position will be available pending final approval of funding for the project and the selected student gaining a PhD scholarship. The Project Interspecific interactions among delphinids: chance or biological significance? Supervisory team: Dr. Guido J. Many species of dolphins coexist and form mixed species associations, but little is known about the interspecific interactions among them and how these may influence the structure and function of ecological communities. Preliminary observations off the North West Cape in Western Australia indicate that Australian humpback (Sousa sp.) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) frequently interact and occur in mixed species associations. This project will focus on investigating the biological significance of these interspecific interactions and mixed species associations by using an integrative approach involving behavioural observations, mark-recapture data and ecological modelling. Specific Requirements for the PhD Position: * Applicants should have at least a first or upper second class Honours degree in an appropriate subject, such as ecology, animal behaviour, marine biology, biology, oceanography, or a related field. A relevant MSc or MRes qualification in some aspect of quantitative biology is preferable. * Applicants should have at least one year of experience in collecting and processing ecological data and a strong background in analytical, quantitative and statistical techniques. * Proficiency in Microsoft Excel/Access and familiarity with computer packages such as R, Matlab and ArcGIS will be advantageous. * Previous field experience including boat handling, behavioural observations and photo-identification of dolphins will be looked upon favourably. * Applicants must be willing to relocate to Exmouth, Western Australia, for periods of up to 6 months while doing fieldwork. * An Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Certificate of Competency as a Coxswain or the willingness to obtain this will be advantageous. Marine Mammal Stranding Response Fall Internships on Cape Cod, MA The International Fund for Animal Welfare’s (IFAW) Marine Mammal Rescue and Research Program is currently accepting applications for Marine Mammal Stranding Response Internships for Fall 2014. Interns will be placed in one of two available tracks (Response or Necropsy), however all interns will receive cross-training in both areas. Background IFAW is an international non-profit organization with headquarters in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW’s Marine Mammal Rescue and Research Program is a federally authorized response program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our mission is to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding “hot spot”, with over 230 strandings per year, including live and dead seals, large whales, porpoises and dolphins and an unusually high frequency of live mass stranded dolphins. Internship Duties – Response Track - Assist staff with all aspects of marine mammal stranding response including; live animal health assessment and triage, stranding hotline coverage, dispatch of field responders, opportunistic public outreach, and biological data collection and sampling from dead stranded marine mammals. - Assist in maintaining preparedness for strandings including: cleaning, organizing, and maintaining stranding response gear and equipment - Assist in data entry of stranding reports, case files, and sample collection - Assist in organizing, cataloging, and archiving stranded marine mammal documentation including photos and video - General office duties and report and outreach/education material preparation Internship Duties - Necropsy Track - Assist the necropsy coordinator in performing post-mortem examinations in both field and laboratory settings - Assist in maintaining, cleaning, and organizing necropsy equipment and supplies - Assist in photo archiving and data entry - Assist in the archiving, shipping and tracking of biological samples - Assist in the preparation of necropsy reports - General office duties including training and outreach material preparation and organization Requirements - Candidates must be at least 18 years old - Must possess a valid driver’s license - Must be of good physical fitness and be able to lift/carry 40lbs and walk long distance in difficult terrain - Able to follow written and oral staff directions and protocols effectively Preferred candidate will also have: - Undergraduate study of biology, zoology, ecology, marine/environmental/animal science - Experience handling animals - Experience driving trucks, trailers and boats - Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Learning outcomes While hands-on experience is opportunistic and the number and type of responses will vary, most interns have the opportunity to: - Develop skills in identifying species commonly stranded on Cape Cod and gain knowledge of their biology and ecology - Acquire basic stranded cetacean and pinniped assessment and triage skills - Gain knowledge of response logistics and management including the use of the Incident Command System - Gain knowledge of the stranding network structure and operation and marine mammal policy as it relates to strandings - Gain basic necropsy skills and knowledge of marine mammal anatomy and physiology - Participate in active research projects as appropriate Additional Information This internship is unpaid. Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the intern. International applicants will be considered, but is the responsibility of the applicant to acquire necessary visas and documentation; including an international driver’s license. Internship start and end dates are flexible but the position requires a minimum 10 week continuous commitment between October 6th and December 31st. Interns are required to attend a minimum of 3 days per week, which may include weekends and holidays. Since strandings are unpredictable, applicants with flexible daily schedules are preferred. If the intern intends to receive academic credit, he/she will be responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institutions. Mediterranean by-catch database: call for papers

Dear Marmam list members, The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the FAO is a Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs)<http://www.gfcm.org/fishery/rfb/en>, fully committed to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best utilization of living marine resources, as well as the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. In recent years, the GFCM has started to tackle the issue of by-catch of species of conservation concern such as cetaceans, seals, seabirds and sea turtles and several binding recommendations addressed to GFCM Members were issued (read more at www.gfcm.org<http://www.gfcm.org>). The GFCM is now starting to develop a regional database on by-catch that will host available information on by-catch rates at regional level, divided by species (or group of species) and type of fisheries. Data from all possible sources will be incorporated to the database. This database is intended to become the reference by-catch database of the region and data will be made available for free consultation. With this aim, we would like to invite all interested authors and scientists to submit published articles as well as grey literature - from 1980s to date - which report and describe by-catch of: · Cetaceans · Monk seal (Monachus monachus) · Seabirds · Sea turtles The database will host data related to Mediterranean and Black Sea only (FAO area 37). About the Opportunity Reporting to the Director of Veterinary Science in Sausalito, CA, the San Luis Obispo (SLO) Operations Manager is a full-time, exempt position with competitive benefits. This role receives public reports of stranded animals and coordinates the appropriate response. *Resident Seal Rehabilitation Internship* We have several intern positions that have opened up at Seal Rescue Ireland for immediate start. We are looking for volunteer interns who are able to commit to a minimum of 3 - 4 months. *Preference will be given to applicants who can commit to 6 months or more.* Seal Rescue Ireland is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of both Grey and Common (or Harbour) Seals, found in difficulty around Ireland’s coast (often due to sickness, parasites, injury or orphaned). We also take in occasional other Irish wildlife in need such as sea birds and Otters. ***Job description:*** The resident interns will participate in hands-on animal care of seals in rehabilitation; coordinating rescues and releases; keeping accurate detailed records; maintaining animal facilities, including hospital units and pools; maintaining and cleaning public facilities; and giving tours and actively interacting with the public. The work hours are long (9-12 hours) and physically demanding. The interns work 5 days a week, with two days off. Volunteers are required to have an advanced level of English, in both speaking and comprehension. *** Responsibilities/duties will include (but are not limited to)*** The interns will report to the seal managers and will be trained in: - Food preparation - Safe animal handling and restraining - Tube feeding, force feeding, hand feeding seals - Natural history of harbour and grey seals - Record keeping - Administration of injections and oral medications - Assisting in rescues and releases nationwide - General cleaning duties of animal and public facilities - Hygiene and quarantine protocols to prevent the spread of disease etc. - Assisting veterinarians in surgical and medical cases when required - Running the visitor’s centre, providing guided tours and engaging with the public - Caring for other wildlife casualties when necessary ***Qualifications:*** - *25 years* or older (required for driving rescue vehicle) - Fluent English (comprehension and speaking) - Have an avid interest in marine mammal care and rehabilitation. - Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in animal care. * **Skills/Experience:*** - Experience in handling wildlife preferred - Excellent organisational and communication skills - Ability to work under pressure - A commitment to wildlife, conservation and volunteer work - Flexible and reliable working attitude - Willingness to work long hours outdoors in Irish weather - Experience in interacting with the public / public speaking - Education experience - Able to lift 20kg and be in good physical shape - Be enthusiastic and eager to help and learn and show initiative We are looking for dedicated, flexible, enthusiastic people, who are able to work and live within a small team and who are self-motivated, show initiative and able to work without constant supervision. We provide accommodation and groceries, for which we request a contribution of EUR €70 per week. Ocean 180 Video Challenge

[cid:image001.jpg@01CFA0E0.B4428310] The Ocean 180 Video Challenge is entering its second year, offering an opportunity for ocean scientists to practice their communication and presentation skills. A total of $9,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to ocean scientists who best communicate their research through film. Sponsored by the Florida Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE Florida) and funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation, Ocean 180 challenges scientists to communicate and share the meaning, significance, and relevance of their research with a broader audience. To enter, ocean scientists are asked to produce a 3-minute video abstract summarizing a recent publication. Scientists at any career stage, including graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to participate. Submissions will ultimately be viewed and evaluated by thousands of middle school students from around the world. In 2014, during Ocean 180's inaugural year, entries were seen by over 30,000 students participating as judges in 13 countries. This is a fantastic way to develop your communication skills and make a broader impact with your research.
