SEEKING FIELD ASSISTANTS FOR RESEARCH ON SOUTHERN AUSTRALIAN BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS IN METROPOLITAN ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA Fieldwork dates: Volunteers are needed beginning the 1st of December 2014 until the 31st of August 2015. Project title: Ecology of the endemic southern Australian bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops australis) in metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia. This project aims to collect baseline information on the abundance, habitat use and social structure of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops australis) in metropolitan Adelaide to improve the scientific basis for their conservation and management. This is an opportunity to gain experience in field techniques for small cetacean research and contribute to a project with very high conservation and management value. Duties: Searching for dolphins, driving of the boat, photo identification, assistance in biopsy sampling, recording field observations, equipment cleaning and, data entry (incl. fin matching). Expectations: Field assistants need to be adaptable and patient as weather is highly dependent. Field work will vary between weekdays and weekends, and assistants will need to be prepared for early morning departures (6-7AM) and long days (6-8 hours) on the water for multiple consecutive days. Expect up to a week between days off, as field work is weather dependent. If the weather isn't right we will NOT be conducting the surveys and will be postponed. Between field days there will be the opportunity for data entry and fin matching of identified individuals. Prerequisites: * Experience of working on a small boat (highly desirable, Coxswain certificate will be highly favoured); * Experience of photo-ID survey techniques (highly desirable); * Experience of field research on small cetaceans (highly desirable); * Enrolled in or completed a degree in biology, marine science, animal behaviour or a related field (desirable) * No history of debilitating seasickness (essential); * Be team-oriented, patient, and have an enthusiastic attitude to hard work, long hours and collecting data on the natural environment (essential); * Fluent in English (highly desirable). New publication: Mating Group Size in Dusky Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus)

(2014), Mating Group Size in Dusky Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus): Costs and Benefits of Scramble Competition. Ethology. doi: 10.1111/eth.12253 Abstract: In fission–fusion social systems with scramble competition between males, multiple males join mating groups while surrounding an oestrous female. If male decisions to join a mating group have been shaped by natural selection, then there should be an optimal group size resulting from the trade-offs between the benefits of monopolizing a female in small groups and the energy lost in defending her from rivals in large groups. Male dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) off Kaikoura, New Zealand, provide a unique opportunity to assess the optimum mating group size because they join transient mating groups not confounded by foraging or predator evasion. Within aggregations of up to 1000 individuals, males search for oestrous females, encountering choices of staying with a large mating group or leaving to find a smaller group. Mating groups typically involve multiple males mating with a single female. We conducted focal follows of mating groups (N = 44) by vessel from November 2011 through January 2012. We used video and a GPS to record group size, behaviour and movement. For each group, we measured potential costs (Swim Speed, Loss of Monopolization Potential) and benefits (Copulation Rate and Duration, Energy Savings). Only Loss of Monopolization Potential was positively correlated with group size, while Energy Savings was negatively correlated. Using these two factors as utility functions, we constructed an optimality model and predicted the optimal mating group size to be seven individuals with a range of 4–11 individuals due to variance. The observed modal mating group size was five dolphins, with a range of 2–15. We compare variation in mating group currencies and sizes to past studies. We discuss potential limitations of applying optimality models to predict mating group size for socially complex and behaviourally plastic species such as dolphins. Call for Contributed Papers: Acoustical Society of America Fall 2014 Meeting: Indianapolis, 27-31 Oct. 2014 Special Animal Bioacoustics Session: The Use of Passive Acoustics for Estimation of Animal Population Density We are hosting a special session at the next Acoustical Society of America conference in Indianapolis (27-31 Oct., 2014). The session will be focused on the techniques used for acoustic-based population density estimation. Currently, the most widely used methods for obtaining density estimates involve visual sightings; however, for elusive species and in remote areas, passive acoustic monitoring offers a cost-effective alternative. We hope to have a range of talks focusing on both current and potential applications to terrestrial and marine species. Therefore, we encourage abstract submissions from researchers who may be monitoring population sizes using acoustics, or would like to explore the potential of doing so. Common dolphin Photo-ID Volunteer Position in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand

A volunteer is required to assist with a PhD study investigating the abundance, social structure and site fidelity of common dolphins (Delphinus sp.) in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. This PhD project is part of the ongoing research of the New Zealand Common Dolphin Project (NZCDP) and the Coastal-Marine Research Group (C-MRG) at Massey University Albany, Auckland. (http://cmrg.massey.ac.nz) PROJECT BACKGROUND: The Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, is an important habitat for common dolphins that occur in the Gulf year round and use the region extensively for foraging and nursing. Common dolphins in this region consistently utilise inhabit coastal waters, making them vulnerable to the effect of tourism, pollution, and inshore recreational bycatch. DATES: While the field season runs year round, currently volunteers are needed from June – October 2014. A minimum commitment of two months is required and priority will be given to those who can commit for longer periods. LOCATION: Auckland, New Zealand FIELDWORK: The volunteer position entails assisting during field surveys and analysis of common dolphin fin photo identification. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in conducting marine mammal field research, identifying individuals based on dorsal fin characteristics, and the use of databases for archiving field data. Field work is physically and at times mentally demanding but it is a great opportunity to gain knowledge in visual cetacean surveying, to get hands-on field experience in relation to survey techniques, photo-identification, behavioural observations, and improve practical skills (data analysis, photo-ID). Fieldwork is weather dependent and can vary between weekdays and weekends. Assistants need to be available full-time including weekends and be prepared to work long hours with early starts. Surveys will be conducted from a 20m whale and dolphin watching vessel. RESPONSIBILITIES: . Assisting with boat-based photo-identification surveys from a local whale and dolphin watching vessel, collecting environmental, location, and behavioural data for dolphin groups (25% of the time). . Subsequent analysis of photo-identification data in the lab, including assistance with photo sorting, grading, and matching, sighting data entry, maintenance of long-term photo-id catalogue. Research assistants should be prepared to work long days in the office analysing of photographs and matching them with the photo-identification catalogue (75% of the time). As this is a volunteer position, there is unfortunately no monetary compensation or living provisions. The successful candidate should arrange their own accommodation in Auckland, living expenses, travel costs and visa. PREREQUISITES: . Be reliable, adaptable, hardworking and patient as fieldwork is highly weather dependent. This means office based work during bad weather and long consecutive days in the field when weather permits. . Have a mature and independent attitude towards marine mammal research . Speak fluent English . Be sociable, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude . Strong interest in the marine environment and conservation . Participants must be able to swim and should be comfortable working on boats QUALIFICATIONS: . The project is well suited to upper level undergrads, recent grads and graduate students who have some background in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Zoology or related fields . New paper linking respiration rates to energy expenditure in minke whales to measure the effect of whale watching activities

Dear MARMAM colleagues, We are happy to announce the publication of the following paper in JEMBE focusing on the behavioural response of minke whales towards whale watching boats and its effects on energy expenditure: Christiansen, F., Rasmussen, M. & Lusseau, D. 2014. Inferring energy expenditure from respiration rates in minke whales to measure the effects of whale watching boat interactions. Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology 459: 96-104. Abstract: Quantifying the energetic costs of human induced behavioral disturbance on wildlife is a crucial step to evaluate the potential long-term effects of disturbance on individual vital rates. Standard methods cannot be used for estimating energetic cost of transport because of the large size of most cetaceans, and instead energetic costs are inferred from respiration rates. We quantified the added energetic costs of avoidance to whale watching boats for minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in Faxaflói bay, Iceland, by comparing minke whale movement tracks and respiration in the presence (impact) and absence (control) of whale watching boats. Energy expenditure was inferred from respiration rates, using published bioenergetic models for minke whales and mass-specific cost of transport (COT) was estimated for different swimming speeds. The sensitivity of the COT estimate to model assumptions was investigated using resampling methods. ANCOVA was used to investigate the effects of swimming speed and whale watching boats on minke whale respiration rate. Respiration rate increased linearly with swimming speed, while COT decreased nonlinearly with increased speed up to an optimal speed between 2.5 and 7.0 m s−1. Respiration rates were higher during interactions with whale watching boats at any given speed, suggesting that boat presence elicited a stress response in the animals, resulting in a 23.2% increase in estimated energy expenditure. Swimming speed also increased during whalewatching interactions from1.62 to 2.64ms−1, resulting in an additional 4.4% increase in estimated energy expenditure during whale watching interactions. Thus, whale watching boat interactions resulted in an overall increase in estimated energy expenditure of 27.6%, from 56.54 to 72.16 J kg−1 min−1. During interactions with whale watching boats, minke whales swam at speeds that were within the lower range of the optimal COT. This suggests that minke whales employ similar avoidance strategies towards whale watching boats as towards natural predators. HUMPBACK WHALE RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN ECUADOR

HUMPBACK WHALE RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN ECUADOR (with possibility for Galapagos Islands extension) The Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) in Ecuador, together with the Marine Biology Association Odyssea (www.odyssea.lu) is offering humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) research internships in the Machalilla National Park in Ecuador. This is where Pacific humpback whales congregate to give birth to their calves, and mate. Dr Cristina Castro from PWF in Ecuador has been carrying out research on humpback whales for 18 years in this National Park. These internships are available for durations of either 8, 10 or 14 days, from June until the end of October 2014. Volunteers will be introduced to and participate in the research techniques involving boat-based photo identification, biopsy sampling, behavioural studies and acoustics. No previous experience is required. Cost of the internship: ranging between 999 to 1650 USD, depending on the length of stay and date of the internship. This fee includes: - Full internship program with lectures, practical training and workshops - Transfers from and to Manta airport - Basic accommodation in small studios (some single, some shared for 2 persons maximum) in Puerto Lopez with kitchen and private bathroom - Boat-based humpback whale photo-identification and behavioral data collection - Training sessions in cetacean research techniques and software, as well as analyzing data with scientific supervision - Lectures on cetacean biology and conservation - Isla de La Plata tours including snorkeling trips - Spanish lessons - Farewell dinner This fee does not include flights to and from Ecuador, food (except for lunch boxes on boat trips and a some dinners when out late during field work), compulsory health and travel insurance, and personal expenses. Morigenos – Slovenian Marine Mammal Society is announcing Dolphin Research Courses in Slovenia (north Adriatic ), where interested individuals can assist in the bottlenose dolphin and loggerhead turtle long-term research and conservation programme. For the 12th year in a row, the courses will be taking place in June, July, August and September 2014. Morigenos is a small research NGO that aims to combine scientific research, monitoring, education, public awareness, capacity building and management, to achieve effective conservation of the marine environment and biodiversity. Slovenian Dolphin Project is a long-term research, monitoring and conservation programme, established in 2002 and focusing on bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Slovenian and adjacent waters in the northern Adriatic Sea. Bottlenose dolphins can be found in the area year-round and about 130 individuals have been photo-identified over the past 12 years. Research activities focus on dolphin distribution, abundance, behaviour, social structure, habitat use, feeding habits, fishery interactions and tourism impact, and aim to provide the scientific baseline for effective conservation of dolphins and their habitat. Apart from dolphins, the research team also undertakes research on loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), which visit this area between April and October. Morigenos Dolphin Research Camps offer interested people to join the research team for 10 days and participate in research activities. This includes boat surveys, land-based watches, theodolite tracking, photo-identification and behavioural observations. All the necessary training is provided through lectures, practical work in the field, and short workshops. Food and accommodation are included. Anyone above the age of 16 can participate, regardless of nationality, academic background or previous experience. This course enables you to participate in day-to-day research activities, as well as obtain background knowledge of marine mammal science, marine biology and conservation. It is equally suitable for students pursuing a career in marine mammal science and for those without an academic interest in this topic. By the end of this course, you will: - have a better understanding of current issues in marine mammal and turtle conservation; - obtain an overview of different methods for studying marine mammals in the wild; - acquire practical experience of pleasures and frustrations of marine mammal field research. Report on the Current Status and Future of Underwater Hearing Resesarch

Greetings - A workshop on the status and future of underwater hearing research was convened from September 10-12 , 2013 in San Diego, California. The workshop was held to evaluate recent and current research, and identify future research avenues with the greatest potential for advancing the state of knowledge on underwater hearing in marine mammals. The workshop consisted of three days of presentations by members of the scientific community actively involved in the study of marine mammal hearing; in particular, research into the relationship between sound exposure and temporary threshold shift, masking, anatomically-based modeling of marine mammal auditory systems, and behavioral and evoked potential audiometry. The presentations were independently reviewed by experts that are active in both marine mammal and terrestrial mammal/human hearing research communities. The workshop was jointly funded by the Living Marine Resources, National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Office of Naval Research. Volunteers urgently required to assist with a study of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Northland, New Zealand

Volunteers urgently required to assist with a study of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Northland, New Zealand Program: The Coastal-Marine Research Group (C-MRG - http://cmrg.massey.ac.nz/) was established under the auspices of the Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (INMS)<http://ins.massey.ac.nz/> at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand in 2000. Since then, both its staff<http://masseyuniversity.webs.com/ourteam.htm> and postgraduate students<http://masseyuniversity.webs.com/students.htm> have undertaken marine mammal research within and beyond New Zealand waters, concentrating specifically on conservation and management orientated questions. Volunteers are required to assist on a PhD study (supervised by Dr Karen Stockin and Dr Mat Pawley, Massey University and Prof Mark Orams, AUT University) to assess the behavioural ecology and conservation of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand. Bottlenose dolphins are classified as nationally endangered within New Zealand waters (Baker et al 2010), with a local population recently described (Tezanos-Pinto et al 2013). This study builds upon earlier research undertaken by Tezanos-Pinto (2009) and Constantine (2002) and will among other things, reassess the status and effects of tourism interactions (a decade on from Constantine 2002). Volunteer activities: The field season runs year round and volunteers are required for all months, with priority given to those that can start July 2014. A minimum commitment of three months is preferred, with priority given to those who can commit for longer periods. The volunteer team will be required to fulfill several key roles: Assist on a 5.5m dedicated research vessel operating from the Bay of Islands. Surveys will involve daily return trips (not overnight) and be conducted in favorable conditions only. As such, no minimum or maximum number of research days onboard the research vessel can be guaranteed Assist with vessel of opportunity data collection in the Bay of Islands Assist with data processing and preliminary analysis on bad weather days Undertake additional responsibilities/roles as the season progresses Effort will placed into allowing all volunteers the opportunity to gain experience on each element. Volunteer requirements: Be adaptable and patient – field work is highly weather dependent and could include long, consecutive days both on and off the water Be enthusiastic and team orientated (both in a living and working environment) A willingness to learn Possess a positive attitude Be polite to, and engage positively with, the local community Be physically fit and able to work in outdoor conditions Speak English Possess basic computer skills (excel, word, etc) Preferred (but not necessary) skills/traits: Be enrolled in, or have completed, a degree in a related field (Biology, Zoology, Marine Biology, Animal Behaviour, etc) Have small boat experience Acoustic/video analysis experience Have previous (marine) field experience Enthusiasm and demonstrable commitment to the project will supersede formal qualifications. Volunteers will be expected to work and live as part of a team with shared cooking and cleaning duties. Unfortunately, monetary compensation cannot be provided, and volunteers will be required to pay for their own food and accommodation. However accommodation will be provided in the field research house at a reasonable rate. Volunteers must pay and organize for their own transport to the field site (3 hours North of Auckland).
