Gardline Environmental Ltd is a member of the Gardline Marine Sciences Limited Group of Companies and is a successful Environmental contractor, operating a fleet of inshore boats, conducting major integrated offshore projects on a worldwide basis and inshore projects for major clients in the UK and overseas. As GEL’s Marine Wildlife Department continues its expansion we are seeking to add to the diverse team and expertise in the following roles; MARINE ACOUSTIC TECHNICIAN(s) The candidate(s) will be expected to conduct acoustic surveys through the use of passive acoustic monitoring systems (PAMS) and noise measurement systems during offshore activities both nationally and internationally. The candidate will play a key role in the development of in-house systems and be responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all Marine Wildlife Departmental acoustic equipment, in accordance with HSSE and QA standards. Compilation and preparation of PAMS and noise monitoring reports including the processing of acoustic data is required. Projects may include marine mammal mitigation or monitoring, ambient noise measurements and operational noise monitoring. The candidate will be responsible for the appropriate collection and processing of data both at sea and in the office. This role will require you to work in the office (Great Yarmouth), but we have an expectation that you will spend up to 120 days at sea at locations worldwide, during a 12-month period. Applicants will be of degree calibre or equivalent in a relevant discipline and possess an understanding of marine acoustics, including both hardware and need to have field experience. Additionally, familiarity with the use of PAMS, CPODs or other underwater noise monitoring equipment is desirable. MARINE WILDLIFE OBSERVER(s) The candidate(s) will be expected to undertake a wide variety of marine wildlife surveys, including marine mammal observations, passive acoustic monitoring, seabird and environmental impact activities in the field, as well as providing general assistance to the project managers, lead scientists and report writer with the production of marine wildlife reports. You will be responsible for the appropriate collection and processing of data both at sea and in the office. This role will require you to work in the office (Great Yarmouth), but we have an expectation that you will spend approximately 120 - 180 days at sea, at locations worldwide, dependent on project requirements, during a 12-month period. Applicants will ideally be of degree calibre or equivalent in a relevant discipline and possess an understanding of marine mammals, their biology and identification and need to have a minimum of two years field experience. Familiarity with the use of Passive Acoustic Monitoring System (PAMS) or previous marine survey experience would certainly be advantageous. Dear all, Positions are open for assisting with a cetacean survey in the Mediterranean Sea (Barcelona-Mallorca), Spain. Dates from 22nd of July to 30th of July 2011. DESCRIPTION: The EDMAKTUB association for the study and disclosure of aquatic environments, specially focused in the study of cetaceans; offer positions for volunteers for one of the trips of the summer campaign of the project “Cetacean population study of the Mediterranean Sea area: Barcelona-Balearic Islands, BCNCET 2010-2011”. The aim of the project is to study the cetacean species present in the Mediterranean Sea (Balearic Sea). The association catamaran will set sail to Mallorca, from the Barcelona port the 22nd of July and be back to Barcelona the 30th of July, both days included. Visual and acoustical surveys will be conducted from early morning to evening during the 9 days in the boat, studying the distribution, behaviour, and sound production of the sighted species. The assistants would be able to learn: species identification, environmental and behavioural data collection, sound collection, and basic marine navigating skills. Accommodation and food is offered in the catamaran during the 9 days, but assistants are required to pay 400€ for food and accommodation expenses. No previous experience is required, as the scientist present in the campaign will provide species identification information and teach assistants. The Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI) conducts cetacean surveys throughout our field season (March - November) from aboard our research yacht Tyba along the north-western coast of Spain. More info about the BDRI here: www.thebdri.com We invite you to join our ongoing new study of the behaviour, communication, habitat use and social lives of bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises along the north-western coast of Spain (Galicia). Every year we welcome aboard enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to contribute directly to our research work. As a volunteer onboard Tyba, you will have the opportunity to see first hand the the incredible diversity of marine wildlife present in these waters. This project offers an insight in the work that our centre is carrying out, about dolphins research in general, you have the opportunity to work with interested people from all over the world, but most important of all – you will contribute to the dolphin conservation and research. The BDRI’s main work is to contribute to bottlenose dolphin conservation through research. Our research is published in scientific journals which is the basis for all the information that we have about bottlenose dolphins today. Hence, knowledge is directly connected to protection and conservation. To volunteer at the BDRI requires a minimum of 6 days commitment, and - weather permitting - we will be out on the water at least during 4-5 days per week. Dear colleagues, The Seal Rehabilitation and Research Center has an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Intern to work in our Seal Care/Veterinary Department. This position is scheduled to start in March 2014 and will last for one year. This position requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and previous marine mammal or wildlife experience is a plus. The SRRC Veterinary Department includes two veterinarians and we are looking for a highly motivated, dynamic candidate who will work closely in a team setting with staff and volunteers to assist with all aspects of veterinary care and husbandry of sick and injured seals. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: Daily care of animals, transport of live/dead marine animals, maintenance of daily food and medical records, post-mortem examinations, sample-taking for various research projects, record-keeping, and computer entry of data. Additional duties and projects may be assigned by staff. This position is unpaid and the intern is required to find its own transportation, we provide housing and meals. The intern should expect to be scheduled to cover a variety of shifts including weekday, nights, weekends and holidays. The ideal candidate should be mature and motivated, and possess a strong work ethic and excellent observational and communication skills (a fluent English level is required). Distance sampling training workshops August 2014

The Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) is hosting two linked workshops in the summer of 2014 in our purpose-built facilities at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. The aim of these workshops is to train participants in the latest methods for design and analysis of distance sampling surveys, including line and point transects. The workshops are taught by leading researchers in the field, using industry-standard software. The first workshop (19-22 August) will run at an introductory level, and will focus on distance sampling methods, largely described in the standard reference book "Introduction to Distance Sampling." The workshop will be a blend of theory and practice and participants will learn how to use the program "Distance." Participants will gain a solid grounding in both survey design and methods of analysis for distance sampling surveys. Note that we have moved the 'automated survey design' and 'incorporating covariates in detection function' from the advanced workshop into the introductory workshop. The advanced distance sampling workshop (25-28 August) will include advanced treatment of: analyses in which detectability on the transect line is not assumed to be perfect (the so-called g(0) problem) and spatial (or density surface) modelling. We will also showcase a series of new R packages we have developed for performing standard as well as sophisticated analyses in R. The aim of this workshop is to bring participants up to date with the latest developments in distance sampling methods and software. It is also an opportunity for those actively engaged in the design, analysis and execution of distance sampling surveys to discuss common issues and problems, and set future research directions. The workshop will be a combination of lectures and computer sessions, with considerable time for discussion. For all workshops, participants are encouraged to bring their own data sets, and can expect to do some preliminary analyses with their data. Computer sessions take place in our modern computer classroom (attached to the seminar room); participants can use our computers or bring their own laptops. PDF available at www.cascadiaresearch.org/hawaii/publications.htm#reports<http://www.cascadiaresearch.org/hawaii/publications.htm#reports> or directly from http://www.cascadiaresearch.org/hawaii/Bairdetal2014_PMRFexposure.pdf ABSTRACT The Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) off the island of Kaua'i is the site of regular United States (U.S.) Navy training, some of which involves mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS) use from different types of military sound sources. PMRF includes acoustic instrumentation which allows for passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) capabilities to detect and localize sounds such as vocalizing marine mammals. Recent boat-based studies at PMRF have utilized real-time PAM (in conjunction with the Marine Mammal Monitoring on Navy Ranges project) to detect odontocetes for vectoring a field tagging boat to groups in order to increase the likelihood of deploying satellite tags. The resulting data have allowed for an assessment of habitat use and range of several different species. Some of these boat-based tagging efforts were timed to occur just before Submarine Commanders Courses (SCCs) occurring on PMRF so that animal movements and diving behavior could be measured both before and during sonar use. PMRF PAM data and tag data were used in this initial analysis to estimate exposure levels for tagged animals and determine whether any large-scale movements of these animals may have occurred in response to MFAS exposure. We first assessed temporal and spatial overlap between the location data from satellite tags and available acoustic recordings and selected a subset of data for which there was sufficient overlap. The MFAS transmission times (determined directly using sounds received on the range hydrophones), ship positions at time of transmissions (provided by PMRF) and animal locations (determined from satellite tag positions) allowed estimation of the sound pressure levels the tagged animals were exposed to using the U.S. Navy's Personal Computer Interactive Multi-sensor Analysis Tool propagation model. Between February 2011 and February 2013, satellite-tag data were obtained from 23 individuals of four species of odontocetes: rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis, n = 8), common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, n = 6), false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens, n = 3) and short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus, n = 6). Satellite tags were deployed on five different occasions during this period, with four of the five efforts timed to coincide with SCCs (February 2011, August 2011, February 2012, February 2013). The remaining field effort occurred prior to the July 2012 Rim of the Pacific exercise. Initial analysis of tag and PMRF data revealed temporal and general spatial overlap for eight individuals of three species: bottlenose dolphin, short-finned pilot whale, and rough-toothed dolphin. This initial exposure analysis was restricted to one bottlenose dolphin, one short-finned pilot whale, and two rough-toothed dolphins. Based on photo-identification and association analyses, all tagged individuals are known to be from populations generally resident to the islands of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau. Satellite tagged animals were exposed to estimated received levels of: 130 to 144 decibels for two rough-toothed dolphins, referenced to a pressure of 1 micropascal (dB re: 1μPa) root mean square, hereafter dB; 149 to 168 dB for a bottlenose dolphin; and 141 to 162 dB for a short finned pilot whale. The bottlenose dolphin showed no large-scale movements out of the area during sonar exposures despite these relatively high predicted received levels, and the short-finned pilot whale actually moved towards areas of higher exposures during the third day of a 3 day period of regular MFAS use. There are a number of acknowledged limitations in terms of the modeling assumptions and the level of resolution on individual response relative to specific sonar transmissions. However, these results demonstrate that this novel integrated approach of using location data from satellite-tagged individuals and modeling to estimate received levels from acoustic recordings from the PMRF hydrophones is a viable and promising approach to examine both estimated exposure levels and potential large-scale movement reactions of tagged individuals. =============================================================================== Robin W.
