Common dolphin Photo-ID Volunteer Position in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand A volunteer is required to assist with a PhD study investigating the abundance, social structure and site fidelity of common dolphins (Delphinus sp.) in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. This PhD project is part of the ongoing research of the New Zealand Common Dolphin Project (NZCDP) and the Coastal-Marine Research Group (C-MRG) at Massey University Albany, Auckland. (http://cmrg.massey.ac.nz) PROJECT BACKGROUND: The Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, is an important habitat for common dolphins that occur in the Gulf year round and use the region extensively for foraging and nursing. Common dolphins in this region consistently utilise inhabit coastal waters, making them vulnerable to the effect of tourism, pollution, and inshore recreational bycatch. DATES: While the field season runs year round, currently volunteers are needed from mid-October to January 2013. A minimum commitment of one month is required and priority will be given to those who can commit for longer periods. LOCATION: Auckland, New Zealand FIELDWORK: The volunteer position entails assisting during field surveys and analysis of common dolphin fin photo identification. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in conducting marine mammal field research, identifying individuals based on dorsal fin characteristics, and the use of MS Access databases for archiving field data. Field work is physically and at times mentally demanding but it is a great opportunity to gain knowledge in visual cetacean surveying, to get hands-on field experience in relation to survey techniques, photo-identification, behavioural observations, and improve practical skills (data analysis, photo-ID). Fieldwork is weather dependent and can vary between weekdays and weekends. Assistants need to be available full-time including weekends and be prepared to work long hours with early starts. Surveys will be conducted from both a 20m whale watch vessel as well as a small independent 5.3m research vessel. As such, applicants should be comfortable from working from a small platform in isolated areas. RESPONSIBILITIES: . Assisting with boat-based photo-identification surveys from a local dolphin watching vessel, and small (<6m) independent research vessel, collecting environmental, location, and behavioural data for dolphin groups (25% of the time). . Subsequent analysis of photo-identification data in the lab, including assistance with photo sorting, grading, and matching, sighting data entry, maintenance of long-term photo-id catalogue using a MS Access database and Finscan. Research assistants should be prepared to work long days in the office analysing of photographs and matching them with the photo-identification catalogue (75% of the time). As this is a volunteer position, there is unfortunately no monetary compensation or living provisions. The successful candidate should arrange their own accommodation in Auckland, living expenses, travel costs and visa. PREREQUISITES: . Be reliable, adaptable, hardworking and patient as fieldwork is highly weather dependent. This means office based work during bad weather and long consecutive days in the field when weather permits. . Have a mature and independent attitude towards marine mammal research . Speak fluent English . Be sociable, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude . Strong interest in the marine environment and conservation . Participants must be able to swim and should be comfortable working on boats including tour platforms and on small open vessels QUALIFICATIONS: . The project is well suited to upper level undergrads, recent grads and graduate students who have some background in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Zoology or related fields . Basic computer proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel and Access) Preferred qualifications but not required: . Field research including photo-identification experience . Previous experience in survey techniques and especially in marine mammal research . Prior experience working on small research vessels . Experience with Endnote . new comment period on false killer whale listing

All -- As you may know, NMFS has proposed listing the Hawaii insular false killer whale as endangered under the ESA. In light of new data, it has just reopened its comment period on the listing for fifteen days. The new data largely concern false killer whales photographed and tagged off Kauai and in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The photo-ID, genetics, and tagging work all indicate that the these animals are part of a Northwest Hawaiian Islands population - distinct from the insular population at issue in the listing. We believe that the new data only provides further confirmation of the isolation of the HI insular whales and the need to list them. Only around 150 individual whales remain. We hope folks can submit comments in continued support of the listing, in light of the new data. The cetacean fishery began in ancient time in Anatolia and continued for over 2300 years, until 1983 when the fishery was banned in Turkey. In the 20th century it was increased, especially in the 1950’s and 1970’s, on the eastern Turkish Black Sea coast because of the Meat and Fish Institution (EBK) Fish Meal and Oil Factory established in Trabzon in 1952 and modernized in 1962. Introduction to Statistical Modelling Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling 22-25 January 2013, University of St. Andrews The Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) at the University of St. Andrews will be running a 4 day ‘Statistical Modelling’ workshop to introduce basic statistical modelling techniques. The workshop will cover Linear Models and Generalized Linear Models to help participants analyse continuous, presence/absence and count data. The course will be heavily data-based and presented using a marine mammal case study and workshop practicals will be based around an impact assessment analysis. The R software package will be used for workshop-based practicals and no prior experience with the R package is assumed. Computer sessions take place in our computer classroom (attached to the seminar room) and participants can use our computers or bring their own laptops. Marine Mammal Behavioral Response Studies in Southern California: Advances in Technology and Experimental Methods. Marine Technology Society Journal 46(4), 46-59.* ABSTRACT: Behavioral response studies (BRS) are increasingly being conducted to better understand basic behavioral patterns in marine animals and how underwater sounds, including from human sources, can affect them. These studies are being enabled and enhanced by advances in both acoustic sensing and transmission technologies. In the design of a 5-year project in southern California (" SOCAL-BRS), the development of a compact, hand-deployable, ship-powered, 15-element vertical line array sound source enabled a fundamental change in overall project configuration from earlier efforts. The reduced size and power requirements of the sound source, which achieved relatively high output levels and directivity characteristics specified in the experimental design, enabled the use of substantially smaller research vessels. This size reduction favored a decentralization of field effort, with greater emphasis on mobile small boat operations capable of covering large areas to locate and tag marine mammals. These changes in configuration directly contributed to significant increases in tagging focal animals and conducting sound exposure experiments. During field experiments, received sound levels on tagged animals of several different species were within specified target ranges, demonstrating the efficacy of these new solutions to challenging field research problems. PROVINCETOWN CENTER FOR COASTAL STUDIES RIGHT WHALE PROGRAM INTERNSHIP The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies is seeking an intern for the upcoming 2013 right whale survey season. This person will work with both the aerial survey and habitat survey teams, who operate between January and May every year, documenting the abundance, distribution and behavior of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay Massachusetts. The intern will primarily assist staff with boat-based photography of right whales, recording of behavioral data, and collection of zooplankton samples and environmental data at stations in Cape Cod Bay. The successful applicant will also be responsible for a number of lab-based photo-identification tasks, such as downloading images, database entry, and matching images to known animals using an online catalog. He/ she will be required to work a minimum of four full days per week. The intern will often collect data independently in the field, thus responsible, detail-oriented applicants are encouraged to apply. Fieldwork will likely involve one to two surveys per week, between January 2 and May 15, 2013. Applicants must be available for the full field season. *Requirements:* - A degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences. - Experience with digital SLR cameras. - Data entry; basic computer skills in programs such as Excel and Word. - Experience working on boats, and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. - Must work well in a team. - Enthusiasm and willingness to learn field and lab based research methods. - A valid US drivers license would be beneficial but is not essential. Housing will be provided and a stipend to cover general living expenses. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to expand their s experience in marine mammal surveys and plankton sampling methods, and will offer the successful applicant the unique chance to work with one of the world’s most endangered cetacean species, the North Atlantic right whale. *Stranding Investigations Biologist Job Announcement * A professional with a Bachelor's degree or a high school degree with five (5) years experience responding to stranded marine mammals and/or sea turtles. *_General Duties:_* The biologist will be directly involved in the 24-hr response, recovery, and transport of stranded marine mammals and sea turtles within Mote's stranding response area.The duties include responding to a 24-hour, 7-day/week stranding notification pager, coordinating response based on the species, number, size, and condition of the animal(s) and coordinating with local, state, and federal partners.The biologist will be directly involved in the recovery, examination, data collection, tissue sampling processing and distribution of samples, and disposal of carcasses. The candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a larger team. Responsibilities include maintenance and data entry in multiple databases, photo archives, supplies inventory, equipment and vehicle maintenance and supervising of interns and volunteers, and assistance with other research projects, as requested by the Program Manager.The biologist will be expected to represent MML and interact with the public in a professional manner, assist MML in education, outreach and other special programs.The Biologist may present scientific research at peer reviewed meetings and/or publish scientific research in peer reviewed publications. ** The SIP works normal business hours Monday through Friday.The biologist will also be expected to respond after-hours to the stranding pager a minimum of three days per week, including weekends and holidays.The schedule will vary depending on the needs of the animals and facilities. Scope of Responsibilities: * Delivery of technical components of commercial contracts * Project management * Participation in fieldwork or site visits as required * Assisting the company maintain its reputation for excellence Skills and Abilities: Essential * A sound understanding of marine mammal ecology and/or behaviour * Post-graduate degree in marine mammal biology or equivalent relevant experience * Willing to learn new skills and contribute to projects that may be outside current areas of expertise * Positive and outgoing approach to work * Willing to work away from the office as required (offshore, UK or overseas) Desirable * Meets the Membership criteria of IEEM * Experience of managing projects with multiple partners and tasks including budget management (including the setting, monitoring and management of project budgets) * Hold a full driving licence * A thorough understanding of marine acoustics and the effects of underwater noise on marine species * Demonstrable ability in the treatment of temporally/spatially correlated data, development of advanced statistical techniques (e.g. GEEs, GAMMs, Bayesian methods) * Comfortable writing and applying code/ syntax (e.g. in R or SAS) to manipulate, format and analyse complex ecological data to identify spatial or temporal change, with a particular emphasis on the potential drivers of any observed change * Experience of participating in marine mammal surveys using visual or towed passive acoustic methods * Able to apply Distance Sampling methodologies in the design and implementation of visual surveys, and the analysis of data to provide robust density estimates (including Model-Based Analysis) * Experience deploying static PAM devices for marine mammal monitoring and/or processing data using PAMGUARD * Proven track record writing ES chapters and / or conducting HRA * Experience of Statutory Agencies/ Regulators, marine (renewable) industry, academic or research institutions or environmental consultancy Salary: We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience and ability with an attractive benefits package Closing Date: Friday, 12 October 2012 Previous applicants for post MS 03.12 need not reapply To apply: Please send your CV and cover letter in the first instance detailing your suitability to the post and your salary expectations to recruitment(a)smru.co.uk, quoting Reference MM 09.12 To find out more about us, please visit our website www.smru.co.uk.
