Best regards, Kirsten Thompson AbstractThe conservation of rare or cryptic species in inaccessible habitats represents a particular challenge to biologists. Since 1991, a collaborative research program involving members of the public, indigenous communities, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (NMNZ) and the Department of Conservation has provided tissue samples for genetic analysis of stranded, or beach-cast cetaceans. The New Zealand Cetacean Tissue Archive (NZCeTA), initiated and maintained by the University of Auckland, is now one of the largest archives of its kind in the world, with tissue samples or extracted DNA from 1982 individuals. Species identity has been confirmed by DNA barcoding, using mtDNA control region sequences for 65% of the samples representing 35 species, 11 of which are from the poorly known beaked whale family, Ziphiidae. Although these animals regularly strand around the coastline of New Zealand there are no known areas at sea where they can be reliably found and very few reported live sightings. Samples collected from strandings of three species: Gray’s (Mesoplodon grayi); straptoothed (Mesoplodon layardii) and Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris), represent 83% (n = 225) of all ziphiids in the NZCeTA (n = 272). As an example of the archives utility, we used the spatial and temporal distribution of these records to provide new evidence for key habitat of these cryptic species and for seasonal and sex-biased patterns of stranding mortality. As beaked whales are known to be threatened by anthropogenic activity in other parts of the world, these records provide a critical baseline for understanding the future impacts of planned development in New Zealand’s near and offshore waters. Dear Marmam¹ers, We are pleased to announce the development of a new tool available from Conserve.IO (http://conserve.io/) focusing on ecological data acquisition and dissemination. In an effort to better understand the diverse needs of the marine mammal world we thought that the MARMAM community might be interested in providing input into the final development process and would appreciate your taking a few minutes to take this ten question survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RRZS5RS The ³tool², in its current form, is a mobile application platform entitled ³Spotter² ( http://conserve.io/?page_id=150) and is designed to empower scientists and resource managers with the ability to quickly and accurately collect geospatially referenced ecosystem data and convey that data to stakeholders in real time. Spotter is cloud-based, and as such it affords geographically separate users the ability to collaborate documenting sightings in real-time. Together, they have outlined a plan to safely develop offshore wind energy along the East Coast without harming the North Atlantic right whale—one of the world’s most endangered giants. With the Obama Administration moving to expedite wind energy projects<http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/kkennedy/offshore_wind_one_step_closer.ht…> off our coasts, this cooperative effort is a fantastic example of the smart-from-the-start planning our oceans need. Offshore wind turbines off our shores can increase the clean, renewable energy flowing into our grid, reducing our dependence on polluting fossil fuels that are harming our climate and our seas. But ocean planners and advocates also want to ensure that the development of this promising new industry is consistent with protection of endangered sea creatures, such as the North Atlantic right whale. Correctly locating offshore wind farms and incorporating prudent protection measures into development plans is therefore extremely important, in order to safeguard the health of these ocean ecosystems, while still growing our clean energy economy. Today, fewer than 500 right whales remain<http://cetus.ucsd.edu/voicesinthesea_org/videos/videoAtlRightMeet.html>, earning them the sad title of one of the world’s most endangered creatures. Each year, these magnificent creatures migrate from their summer feeding grounds off the coast of New England down to Georgia and Florida, where they give birth in the warmer waters. By siting offshore wind turbines correctly, we can avoid interrupting their natural migration patterns with potentially harmful noise and ship traffic. Good planning like this ensures we can protect these creatures, and get clean, climate change-fighting offshore wind power up and running. With this background in mind, NRDC and other environmental groups have been working closely with wind developers to ensure that both the whales are protected and the wind companies can capitalize on growing market opportunities. The win-win agreement reached this week includes several compromises on how companies can explore, test, and develop offshore wind sites, including: - Seasonal restrictions on certain noise-generating activities during the whales’ peak migration through the Mid-Atlantic region on their way between their calving and feeding grounds; - Limits on boat speed at and near offshore wind sites; - Preventive measures, such as the use of noise-reducing technologies, that reduce risk during non-peak period of the migration. - And real-time monitoring by marine mammal observers to ensure that whales are not getting too close to potentially harmful activities. This type of comprehensive planning—incorporating the concerns and ideas of multiple stakeholders—is gradually making its way into our national dialogue when it comes to ocean management. A fundamental concept of our first-ever National Ocean Policy<http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/schasis/new_national_ocean_policy_will.ht…>, marine spatial planning can help evaluate the costs and benefits<http://www.nrdc.org/oceans/cmsp.asp> of various ocean activities occurring in the same area—from fishing and shipping to energy development and recreation—while incorporating the need to protect fragile ecosystems now and for generations to come. And as has already been shown in economic studies, this coordination between various industries and stakeholders can help maximize economic benefits and minimize losses. One study in Massachusetts concluded that optimal siting of offshore wind zones could generate more than $10 billion in extra value<http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/schasis/ocean_planning_would_bring_bil_1.…> for the *clean energy sector*, and prevent $1 million in losses to nearby fishing and whale-watching industries, as compared to the status quo. Thanks to the cooperation and comprehensive thinking of wind developers and environmental groups, smart-from-the-start planning is taking shape off our east coast. In the coming years, we can expect to see cleaner, renewable energy flowing into our grid, while North Atlantic right whales continue their migration down to warmer waters. And with smart planning efforts like this leading the way, we’re looking forward to a healthier and more sustainable future for our oceans.

New Publication: Estimating cetacean carrying capacity based on spacing behaviour

PLoS ONE 7(12): e51347.doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0051347 Abstract: Conservation of large ocean wildlife requires an understanding of how they use space. In Western Australia, the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) population is growing at a minimum rate of 10% per year. An important consideration for conservation based management in space-limited environments, such as coastal resting areas, is the potential expansion in area use by humpback whales if the carrying capacity of existing areas is exceeded. Here we determined the theoretical carrying capacity of a known humpback resting area based on the spacing behaviour of pods, where a resting area is defined as a sheltered embayment along the coast. Two separate approaches were taken to estimate this distance. The first used the median nearest neighbour distance between pods in relatively dense areas, giving a spacing distance of 2.16 km (±0.94). The second estimated the spacing distance as the radius at which 50% of the population included no other pods, and was calculated as 1.93 km (range: 1.62-2.50 km). Using these values, the maximum number of pods able to fit into the resting area was 698 and 872 pods, respectively. Given an average observed pod size of 1.7 whales, this equates to a carrying capacity estimate of between 1187 and 1482 whales at any given point in time. This study demonstrates that whale pods do maintain a distance from each other, which may determine the number of animals that can occupy aggregation areas where space is limited. This requirement for space has implications when considering boundaries for protected areas or competition for space with the fishing and resources sectors. New publication of franciscana dolphins from Patagonia Argentina

Franciscana Dolphins, Pontoporia blainvillei, of the Río Negro Estuary, Patagonia, Argentina. Marine Biodiversity Records, 5, e102 doi:10.1017/S1755267212000875 Abstract Studies on the biology of the franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) in the Río Negro Estuary (RNE), Patagonia, Argentina, were carried out from 2002 to 2011. Information about group size, group dispersion and behaviour was collected from the coast and by boat, using scanning and focal animal/group sampling methodology. Group size varied from 1 to 5 dolphins ( X = 1.69; standard deviation (SD) = 0.74; N = 121), 2 being the most frequent value (46.28%; N = 56). Group dispersion varied from 0 to 10 dolphin length (DL) ( X = 1.4; SD = 0.75; N = 51), 0 DL (54.9%; N = 28) being the most frequent value. Behaviour of travelling, feeding, milling and resting were recorded, with a higher frequency of animals travelling (36.58%; N = 45). Calves were observed in spring and summer (N = 10). 13 stranded individuals were reported and 3 of them were collected from gillnets. Data presented herein indicate year-round presence of franciscana as well as the RNE being the southernmost breeding and feeding site reported to date. The establishment of the proposed natural reserve by the Governments of Río Negro and Buenos Aires provinces and continued long-term studies are urgently recommended. New paper on blue whale feeding behavior

ABSTRACT: The extreme body size of blue whales requires a high-energy intake and therefore demands efficient foraging strategies. As an obligate lunge feeder on aggregations of small zooplankton, blue whales engulf a large volume of prey-laden water in a single, rapid gulp. The efficiency of this feeding mechanism is strongly dependent on the amount of prey that can be captured during each lunge, yet food resources tend to be patchily-distributed in both space and time. Here, we measured the three-dimensional kinematics and foraging behaviour of blue whales feeding on krill, using suction-cup attached multi-sensor tags. Our analyses revealed 360° rolling lunge-feeding manoeuvres that reorient the body and position the lower jaws so that a krill patch can be engulfed with the whale’s body inverted. We also recorded these rolling behaviours when whales were in a searching mode in between lunges, suggesting that this behavior also enables the whale to visually process the prey field and maximize foraging efficiency by surveying for the densest prey aggregations. These results reveal the complex manoeuvrability that is required for large rorqual whales to exploit prey patches and highlight the need to fully understand the three-dimensional interactions between predator and prey in the natural environment. Report of tagged porpoise in UK

Apologies for cross-posting I wonder if anyone has been tagging porpoises recently in NW Europe using a tag of the following description passed to us by a fisherman in UK coastal waters from last month: "The tag was like a lollipop, the lolly part being a circular orange/vermilion disc, about the diameter of a cricket ball, the end of the "stick" was attached on the left side leading edge of the dorsal fin, very obvious and visible. The porpoise was on its own which is unusual in this area, particularly with all the sprat and herring about just now." Aloha, Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) -based in Maui, Hawai'i- is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting whales and other marine life through research, education, and conservation. Our researchers have studied whales and dolphins throughout the Pacific for over 30 years and currently conduct projects in Hawai'i, Australia, and Ecuador. Commitment PWF is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated person to fill the full-time permanent position of Research Analyst and assist with our ongoing marine mammal research in Hawai'i and throughout the Pacific. Responsibilities The position is based at PWF's headquarters in Ma'alaea, Maui, Hawai'i. Primary responsibilities are office-based and include organizing, analyzing, and managing entry of large volumes of historical and current data. Emphasis will be given to ecological parameters driving distribution and abundance, social structure, and behavior of marine mammals, including influence of anthropogenic factors. The researcher will participate in the generation of reports and peer-reviewed publications under the supervision of the Research Director. The majority of PWF research takes place within the four-island region of Maui County, therefore additional responsibilities may include assisting with vessel-based data collection on board PWF's whale-watching or snorkeling trips, and/or research-specific surveys. Other duties may apply from time to time according to the needs and requirements of the Research Department. Qualifications - MS degree in marine biology or related field and 3-5 years of experience working in the field with marine mammals -preferably odontocetes and/or mysticetes-, or equivalent combination of education and experience; - Advanced analytical skills including manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting data; - Excellent knowledge of database management, GIS and statistical software (Microsoft Access, SQL, ArcGIS, Distance, Mark-Recapture software, R -preferable); - Excellent knowledge of current analytical methodologies.
