The incumbent will specifically work with researchers on a project to summarize and analyze water temperature data in relation to cold-related manatee mortality. The main responsibilities for this position are entering and verifying tabular and spatial data; assisting with the maintenance, quality assurance and quality control of databases; developing cartographic products, descriptive statistics, graphs, and written summaries for use in reports and presentations and for management purposes; assisting with metadata documentation and data archival; and locating, retrieving and compiling biological and environmental data. The person in this position will communicate technical information to coworkers, while maintaining a professional working environment that promotes teamwork within working units and with the Marine Mammal Program at FWRI. Required Education: A Bachelor’s degree with a major in one of the life or physical sciences. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Knowledge of GIS, relational databases and data management principles. * Knowledge of wildlife ecology, biology, or natural systems. * Skilled at using a personal computer, preferably including experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and ArcGIS. * Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to work well independently and as a member of a team. Qualified applicants will need to be organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated and adept at problem-solving and time management to succeed in this position. Preferred Experience: Applicants having experience with SQL Server, Python, and/or R may be given preference. Manatee Tracking Project Seasonal Research Assistant The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Marine Mammal Research Group is looking for one field biological technician to work for the upcoming winter-spring season in St. Petersburg, FL. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Fish and Wildlife Research Institute Section: Wildlife Research Subsection: Marine Mammals Location: St. Petersburg, FL (field work in Brevard County) Position#: 77907345 Rate of Pay: $11.00 - $12.00 per hour depending on experience; 40 hr/week, some overtime; there are no paid benefits. Application Closing Date: October 15, 2012 Start Date: November 1, 2012 Duration: 6-8 months Position description: The employee's primary responsibility is to assist researchers in the Manatee Behavioral Ecology and Movements Program with radio-tracking manatees along the East Coast of Florida by following tagged individuals from land and small boats to record behavioral observations. The principle aims of this study are to characterize manatee use of warm-water refugia and essential winter foraging habitat using state-of-the-art satellite-linked GPS technology. Other duties include equipment maintenance, data entry, mapping and interpreting Argos and GPS satellite telemetry data, preparing reports of habitat site visits, miscellaneous office tasks, and public outreach as needed. The person will participate in manatee captures, currently scheduled for mid-December. Applicants should understand that this job requires them to be wet, dirty and outdoors in all weather conditions. The office is headquartered in St. Petersburg, FL but the primary field site is near Titusville, FL. Travel to other areas of the state may be required based on animal movements or project needs. Lodging, per diem, and transportation costs are provided while at the field site. Hours are generally Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, but some evening and weekend hours may be required. Field work is expected to last through March, followed by work on equipment and data in the lab. This position requires the applicant to drive a truck towing a boat trailer. Qualifications: A bachelor's degree with a major in one of the biological sciences is required. Previous experience in boat handling and trailering is strongly desired. Applicant should have field research experience with wildlife. Experience with radio-telemetry tracking gear is desirable. The successful candidate must have strong computer skills, preferably including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word applications. Experience with GIS is a plus. Organizational skills, attention to detail, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work successfully as part of a team are essential qualifications for this position. He/She must have a valid US driver's license, a good driving history, and must be able to swim. Request for Sowerby's beaked whale photos

Dear MARMAM subscribers, I am looking for any Sowerby's beaked whale photographs to include in a photo-id study of Sowerby's beaked whales on the Scotian Shelf conducted by the Whitehead Lab, Dalhousie University. Photographs from different years and locations would add greatly to the temporal and spatial scope of the study, and any additional photogaphs of this species would be helpful as sightings are generally rare. Photo-id work is mostly focused on dorsal fins, however photos of melons or flanks may also be useful as many individuals are well-marked. We analyzed the spatial and temporal patterns of mortality of large whales in the Northwest Atlantic (23.5°N to 48.0°N), 1970 through 2009, in the context of management changes. We used a multinomial logistic model fitted by maximum likelihood to detect trends in cause-specific mortalities with time. We compared the number of human-caused mortalities with U.S. federally established levels of potential biological removal (i.e., species-specific sustainable human-caused mortality). From 1970 through 2009, 1762 mortalities (all known) and serious injuries (likely fatal) involved 8 species of large whales. We determined cause of death for 43% of all mortalities; of those, 67% (502) resulted from human interactions. Entanglement in fishing gear was the primary cause of death across all species (n= 323), followed by natural causes (n= 248) and vessel strikes (n= 171). Established sustainable levels of mortality were consistently exceeded in 2 species by up to 650%. Probabilities of entanglement and vessel-strike mortality increased significantly from 1990 through 2009. There was no significant change in the local intensity of all or vessel-strike mortalities before and after 2003, the year after which numerous mitigation efforts were enacted. So far, regulatory efforts have not reduced the lethal effects of human activities to large whales on a population-range basis, although we do not exclude the possibility of success of targeted measures for specific local habitats that were not within the resolution of our analyses. It is unclear how shortfalls in management design or compliance relate to our findings. Analyses such as the one we conducted are crucial in critically evaluating wildlife-management decisions. The results of these analyses can provide managers with direction for modifying regulated measures and can be applied globally to mortality-driven conservation issues. Assortative pairing, and its relation to mate choice, has rarely been documented in mammals. Using data collected during 1998*-*2007, we investigated size-assortative pairing as it relates to discrimination amongst potential mates in humpback whale, *Megaptera novaeangliae*, dyads in the Hawaiian breeding grounds. Across 67 male*-*female dyads in which both individuals were measured using underwater videogrammetry, male length was positively correlated with female length. Detailed analyses on the assessment of maturity by comparisons with whaling data revealed that mature-sized females associated almost exclusively with mature-sized males and had a significant preference for large mature-sized males. In contrast, mature-sized males were less discriminating in their associations with females and showed no significant preference for mature-sized females. However, mature-sized males that associated with immature-sized females were significantly smaller than males that associated with mature-sized females. Finally, immature-sized males tended to associate with immature-sized females. The sex differences in size preference by mature whales probably reflect the relatively high costs of mature females mating with small or immature males compared to the lower costs of mature males mating with small or immature females. Body size appears to influence the adoption of alternative mating tactics by males such that smaller mature males avoid the costs of competing for the highest-quality females and instead focus their attentions on smaller females that may or may not be mature. Overall, our results provide the first quantitative evidence of size-assortative pairing and female discrimination amongst potential mates in humpback whales and indeed in any cetacean species.
