New paper - Dolphins and African apes: comparisons of sympatric socio-ecology

Dear Colleagues, This is to announce a new paper in the current issue of Contributions of Zoology entitled " Dolphins and African apes: comparisons of sympatric socio-ecology " co-authored by myself and Craig B. Stanford. Abstract Dolphins and African apes are distantly related mammalian taxa that exhibit striking convergences in their socioecology. In both cetaceans and African apes, two or more closely related species sometimes occur in sympatry. However, detailed reviews of the ways in which sympatric associations of dolphins and apes are similar have not been done. As fi eld studies of dolphins and apes have accumulated, comparisons of how the two groups avoid direct food competition when in sympatry have become possible. In this paper we review sympatric ecology among dolphins and African apes, and examine convergences in species-associations in each taxa. We review evidence for hypotheses that seek to explain avoidance of food competition, and consider whether ape-dolphin similarities in this area may be related to the way in which social groups in both taxa optimally exploit their food resources. Enthusiastic volunteers needed to help with our ongoing research, education and interpretation programmes concerning the marine wildlife of Cardigan Bay. We primarily study the bottlenose dolphins through photo-identification, and also monitor harbour porpoise and Atlantic grey seal populations. Volunteers play a vital role in the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centres work. The centre relies on the generous help of volunteers to undertake its work and greatly appreciates your time. We welcome people with all sorts of skills to offer, and enthusiasm is as valued as experience, since training is provided. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to make a positive contribution to marine wildlife conservation and to gain knowledge and experience of the species and habitats in Cardigan Bay. It can be a great chance to gain experience of field work, research methods and public awareness and education programmes, gain essential skills for a career in the environment or conservation and meet people who share your interests. If you have any specific skills or experience such as in website creation, fundraising, the media, DIY skills, exhibition, interior or graphic design and would like to help with project development, please contact us. Volunteering at CBMWC Desired skills An interest in wildlife and conservation is most important, along with enthusiasm and willingness to work in a conscientious and responsible manner. It is also important that you are fluent in speaking English. We welcome people with experience working with the public or in environmental interpretation or education, however this is not essential. Indeed this is a great opportunity to gain skills in these areas. Good verbal and written communication skills and IT skills are likewise useful but not essential. Time commitment Volunteers are needed from April until November 2007. We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 weeks (due to training). Volunteers living locally who are available on a part-time basis are also welcome year round and are greatly appreciated. Accommodation and expense arrangements Accommodation can be arranged for committed volunteers (approx £50 per week). Volunteers are responsible for their own food, travel and accommodation costs. Dear All I'm one of the life science editors at Cambridge University Press. We're looking to expand our publishing programme in the marine sciences and seeking proposals for academic volumes in marine mammalogy. This could range from basic undergraduate textbooks in marine biology to advanced, research level, edited volumes on niche subjects, such as Ian Boyd's recent Top Predators in Marine Ecosystems. Particular topics of interest are behavior, behavioral ecology, marine bioacoustics, and a textbook of marine mammals (graduate level). However, I would be happy to discuss potential projects across the subject fields, and at all levels. If any of you feel a burning desire to write, have a dusty publishing proposal sat upon your shelves, or perhaps know a colleague who does, do please get in touch. We are pleased to announce that the 5th Animal Sonar Symposium will be held from September 14 to 18, 2009, in Kyoto, Japan. This meeting has been held approximately every 10 years very successfully at Frascati (1966), Jersey (1979), Helsingor (1986), and Algarve (1998). We invite you to participate in this meeting. We provide contributed poster sessions that anyone can join. Big afternoon poster sessions are designed for the discussion among participants. Not only biosonar research but also any bioacoustic subjects are welcome to join us. The best presenter(s) will be awarded. All of the contributed papers will be peer reviewed. More details on the commom seal at Catalonian coast

On September the 19th a juvenile common seal (Phoca vitulina) was found on the river Ebro's delta. This is a protected area on the Catalonian coast where there have never been sightings of this species. Some fishermen saw the seal around 19:00h, resting on the sandy shore zone, and apparently it did not show any signs of harm. The official organization responsible for the assistance and rehabilitation of marine animals in Catalunya (Spain), CRAM Foundation, was alerted, but when the veterinarians and rescue team arrived to the site, the seal had returned to the water. Early the next morning, the rescue team came back to the area and were able to locate the seal nearby. They were able to assess its health state and they confirmed a very poor nutritional condition, weakness and alterations of its behaviour and respiratory pattern. They decided to take the seal urgently to the rehabilitation centre located in Premià de Mar (Barcelona) where they would be able to continue the assessment and start the appropriate treatments. Unfortunately the animal died en route to the rehabilitation centre so instead it was taken to the University (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona) where the pathology specialists could make the post mortem exam in order to find the cause of death. The post-mortem exam revealed the seal was a young female weighing 15 kg and measuring 95 cm in length. It showed a serious intestinal impaction in the cecum, 26 cm long, fibrinous enteritis, a serious parasitism by nematodes in the stomach that produced a diffused gastritis and lung collapse. Further microbiology and histopathology exams are currently being carried out by experts on these subjects. The Common seal (Phoca vitulina) lives in Arctic and Subarctic waters of the Pacific and Atlantic seas and this event is completely unusual in the Mediterranean area, so further investigations are currently being carried out in order to find the causes by which the seal could travel to this latitude. It is unknown how a female that has not yet reached the adult state could be found in Catalonian waters and any help to find the cause would be welcome from CRAM Foundation. We have worked on the rescue and medical care of any stranding animal found on Catalonian coasts for 15 years. On this time we have been many unusual things, but last weekend we found a common seal on our shore. As you may know, these pinnipeds live in much colder waters. This is an exceptional event and have thought on your publication to let every experts know about it and, maybe, be able to find any explanation to it.
