The research will take place onboard a 14.5 m research sailing catamaran equipped with all necessary navigation safety and research instrument (GPSs, plotters, echo-sounders, underwater digital video and still cameras, binoculars etc) as well as a dual frequency hydrophone and DAT recorder. The most important requirements for participants are enthusiasm, and the ability and willingness to work under often difficult, but rewarding field conditions. The duties of the participants require involvement to all the activities onboard including: a.. Navigation and sailing (taking shifts with the trained crew and acquiring experience). b.. Research (visual scan, use of the hydrophone, filling in forms, preliminary analysis of effort/distribution and Photo-id data, maintenance of equipment). c.. Support activities (maintenance and cleaning of the vessel, cooking etc). Preference will be given to those who: 1. have previous marine mammal field experience particularly with visual and acoustic surveys 2. have some sailing experience On board accommodation will be provided. Dive analysis software or macros

Hi All, I have a collection of approximately 20 hours of dive data (time and depth) collected via a VEMCO transmitter. All received data is stored as a text file, which I imported into Excel for further analysis. To date, I have been doing most analysis through visual inspection of dives and would very much like to conduct a more quantitative analysis for comparison. Does anyone know of or have access to either dive analysis software or a series of macros for Excel that may assist me in some way? Thank you in advance. -- Briana H. IWC SOCER solicitation - reminder

I am posting the following as a gentle reminder, especially to those researchers who work in the Indian Ocean (if you cannot get us your information by the April 1 deadline, please still send it through, as we still may be able to include it): SOLICITATION LETTER TO POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTORS TO THE STATE OF THE CETACEAN ENVIRONMENT REPORT (SOCER) This letter is a call for submissions to enable us to produce a draft State of the Cetacean Environment Report (SOCER) for consideration by the IWC's Scientific Committee. It will be the fifth SOCER produced. The ultimate objective is to provide Commissioners (in response to Resolution 2000-7) and other interested parties with a non-technical periodic summary of events, developments and conditions in the marine environment that are relevant to cetaceans. Such developments might range from unusual mortalities to new legislation protecting marine habitats. The report is compiled on an annual basis, with pre-selected regions to be treated each year. These regions include: Mediterranean and Black Seas; North and South Atlantic; North and South Pacific; Arctic and Southern Ocean; Indian Ocean; and Global. This year will be devoted to the Indian Ocean. Every 4-6 years, the regional reports will be combined, along with important additions pertaining to the various regions that occurred in the intervening period, into a complete global SOCER. We are asking for submissions of information that in your opinion merit inclusion in this report. This should primarily include information on events from 2004, 2005 and the months of 2006 before the submission deadline, although earlier data may be submitted if relevant over the long term. You may submit information in two ways: 1. Send an email to one of the SOCER editors (see contact information below) and include the relevant scientific paper(s) as an attachment; 2. Use the standardised form for data entry, which can be downloaded from http://www.iwcoffice.org/SCWEB/socer.htm. Please fill out all the relevant fields. Any additional information provided (see item VIII: "additional information and remarks") will assist the editorial decision-making process regarding inclusion in the SOCER. If an event or development does not fit the format of the form, but you nonetheless believe it warrants inclusion, please specify this in Item VIII. The relevant scientific papers should be submitted with the submission form or otherwise drawn to the attention of the editors. With few exceptions, only information stemming from published scientific papers and reports or other authoritative sources can be accepted. However, any supporting documentation for an event or development - such as news items - may also be submitted with the form. *****The deadline for submissions for the 2006 SOCER is: April 1, 2006. The SOCER will also contain a glossary of technical terms. The draft version of this report will be written by the principal SOCER editors (Michael Stachowitsch, Naomi Rose and Chris Parsons) and circulated as a Scientific Committee document in advance of the Scientific Committee meeting, where its content and format will be evaluated. Please note that, due to editorial considerations (succinct format for Commissioners), not all submissions may be incorporated (or incorporated in full) into the SOCER. Internship application deadline extended

The Center for Oceanic Research and Education (CORE), based in Essex, MA, has extended its application deadline to April 1, 2006 for the summer internship session. Applicants must be at college or university level or graduates. They must also either be American citizens or able to work in the US, as this is a partially paid internship. CORE is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and conservation of cetaceans. Cetaceans are whales, dolphins and porpoises. CORE's mission is to promote stewardship and conservation of cetaceans and their marine environment. Our research focuses primarily upon the populations of fin and humpback whales found in the inshore waters of New England. We are currently working on several projects including: hierarchy among social/feeding groups of humpback whales. novel feeding behavior (the use of bubbles) in fin whales. shifts in distribution of whale species over time on-going research includes photo-identification studies of humpback whales, fin whales, sperm whales, Northern right whales, minke whales and pilot whales. CORE conducts whale watch education programs, school presentations and public outreach activities throughout the year as part of our endeavor to educate the public about endangered whales and the marine environment. We collect much of our data aboard commercial whale watching vessels that operate out of Gloucester, MA. Interns are aboard each trip as research assistants, and are primarily responsible for data collection. The types of data recorded on each trip include physical information such as climate and sea conditions, number and species of each cetacean, as well as behavioral information and identification photographs of focus animals. Other duties aboard the boats include answering passenger questions, assisting with fund raising efforts and helping crew on deck. A paid "education mate" position aboard the whale watching boat in Gloucester is included - interns will rotate day-to-day through the week as research assistants and education mates. There are also paid galley positions available to interns which provide another daily avenue for raising personal funds. Founded in 1996, CORE earned our non-profit status in 1999. Though we have no publications currently in print, we are currently analyzing data on several on-going research projects with the goal of developing papers on such varied subjects as novel feeding behavior in fin whales, to observations of Sowerbys and Cuviers beaked whales in offshore submarine canyons. Interns can expect to participate in and learn a variety of facets of research including: Data collection; data entry; archiving and cataloging photographs and negatives; general office work. Data analysis methods; individual identification of whales through photo analysis; data submission to educational on-line program, WhaleNet. Public speaking; fund raising; correspondence with other organizations, researcher and students. Interns are also assigned a specific on-going research project and will be expected to complete an extensive reading list to gain important background knowledge. Basics of navigation; boat handling; use of marine electronics including GPS, LORAN, radar and echolocation; handling lines; and knowledge of vessel safety and emergency protocol. We require a two-month minimum stay. These are strictly unpaid, volunteer positions. However, interns will be paid for their duties as Education Mate, as well as the galley position aboard the commercial whale watching vessels out of Gloucester. We do not provide room or board, but will assist interns in any way in finding housing and transportation. We also offer flexible hours, so that interns can obtain part-time jobs, if needed. Interns are also encouraged to receive either undergraduate or graduate credits for their internships with CORE. We will help students design and implement a project through their school or with two local schools with whom we are affiliated (Endicott College, Beverly, MA and Wheelock College, Boston, MA). Interviews will be conducted during the first two weeks of April. The deadline for the fall internship session is July 24th, with interviews during the first week of August. Volunteers Required for Sea Life Surveys The Sea Life Surveys team are looking to recruit volunteers to help with the 2006 summer season. Volunteer positions are available between April and October, with opportunities to start immediately. Sea Life Surveys is a busy whale watching company based on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. We are looking for enthusiastic people to work in our busy office helping with everything from bookings to cleaning and on our boats with guiding, maintenance and assisting with collection of important information about the marine wildlife off the Isle of Mull. Volunteers must have a professional attitude and be willing to learn, able to work 6-days a week with long hours. In return volunteers will be provided accommodation, a weekly food allowance and a summer of new skills and experiences, both ashore and afloat. Whaling books for sale

The Whale Museum, located on San Juan Island in Washington state, recently received a donation from a personal library of approximately 150 books on whaling and whale-related topics. While we have added most of these to our collection, there are about 60 books that we would like to sell to raise money for the museum. These 60 books are a diverse collection on the topic and range from common to rare. The most valuable of the books are being listed on E-Bay by one of our volunteers. Those titles include: "Cap'n George Fred" Himself; Addendum to "Starbuck" and "Whaling Masters"; Journal of a Voyage to the Northern Whale-Fishery; Seasons with the Sea-Horses (this is currently on E-Bay); Stove by a Whale; The Arctic Whalers; The Whalers of Akutan; Whales & Destiny: The Rivalry Between America; and Whaling and Fishing.
