MARINE MAMMAL MANAGEMENT COURSE (CZMT-0636-DE1) REMINDER WELCOME- all those interested in marine mammals. This is a reminder that Registration is now open for the most recent edition of the Oceanographic Center of Nova Southeastern University's Global Distance Education Course in Marine Mammal Management (MMM). This Course is offered to anyone, anywhere in the world through Distance Learning. Registration for the winter term closes on January 5th, 2007. MMM runs from JANUARY 3 TO MARCH 15, 2007, and covers a range of pertinent topics. Bonjour I recently contributed a chapter in a book on Sexual Segregation, in which I examine the extent and the possible causes of sexual segregation in odontocetes. An interdisciplinary background integrating living marine resources and the physical marine environment is essential with specific expertise relating to essential fish habitat or fish bioacoustics and noise impacts. M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Fisheries Biology, Fisheries Management, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Marine Ecology, or other related disciplines of Marine Sciences. Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society - North America (WDCS -NA) Intern / Residential Volunteer Program We are now accepting applications for the April start date. Deadline for applicants is January 18th 2007. Background to Program WDCS offers a volunteer / intern program to qualified applicants throughout the year. The program provides a unique opportunity to garner experience in research, education and conservation of marine mammals. WDCS is willing to help qualified students obtain credits for the program through their college or university. The program is broken down into 3 blocks with a minimum commitment of 3 months, and the maximum stay being 4 months. Each block provides different opportunities regarding the work to be carried out. This is reflective of the weather conditions in the northeast US, the fact the whales are migratory and the varying conservation / management duties throughout the year. This type of diversity will provide interns with breadth of experience of working for an international organization in the conservation arena. It may also open doors to other opportunities within WDCS as it continues its development and growth. * The program may include all or some portion of the following: collection of distributional data of marine mammals, cataloguing individually identifiable humpback whales, responding to stranded marine mammals, attending key conservation and stakeholder meetings, outreach to local schools and the general public, and possibility to transfer to the WDCS Wildlife Center on the shores of the Moray Firth, Scotland for a period of time as a residential volunteer - min 1 month, max 6 months These internships are on a volunteer basis. * Sea Watch Foundation – Marine Research Volunteer Opportunities in New Quay for 2007 * Volunteers are invited to assist with the running of the bottlenose dolphin and harbour porpoise monitoring project, based in New Quay, West Wales. The Volunteers will help the Cardigan Bay Monitoring Officer and the Sighting Officer with land- and boat-based marine mammal surveys and photo-identification studies, database entry, awareness raising and education initiatives, acoustic monitoring programme, and will assist with and participating in training courses and public talks. Volunteers are required from April until October 2007, for 4 separate periods of 6-7 weeks each. Preference will be given to those who can stay for more than one period, including the whole 6-months field season. Volunteers will be based in New Quay, West Wales. Accommodation is provided at a rate of £45/week. Dear All, The following paper has been recently published on-line in Conservation Genetics. Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) in UK waters are differentiated from a population in the Mediterranean Sea and genetically less diverse Stefania Gaspari, Sabina Airoldi, A. Rus Hoelzel Abstract The Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) has a worldwide distribution, but little is known about their population genetic structure. Local coastal populations are never known to be abundant, and are sometimes under anthropogenic impact. Therefore the question of regional differentiation by genetic drift and overall diversity levels is of conservation interest. Here we present preliminary data that clearly indicate genetic differentiation and lower genetic diversity of a population sampled in UK waters (primarily from the Western Isles, Scotland) compared to a Mediterranean sample. Significant differentiation was found in comparison with a sample from the Mediterranean for both microsatellite DNA markers (FST = 0.0296) and mtDNA sequence data (FST = 0.260; /ST = 0.542). During the last years, and especially after several mass strandings linked to high level military sonar use, there has been a growing attention of the cetological community and significant research effort as well on Ziphius cavirostris and other ziphiid species. We hope that the following paper that has been published recently may be of interest to the members of this list. Woodside, J.M., David, L., Frantzis, A., and Hooker, S.K., 2006, Gouge marks on deep-sea mud volcanoes in the eastern Mediterranean: Caused by Cuvier’s beaked whales? Deep Sea Research I, 53:1762-1771. Abstract Enigmatic seafloor gouge marks at depths of 1700-2100 m have been observed from submersible during geological survey work studying mud volcanoes in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The marks consist of a central groove (about 10 cm deep and 12 m long), superimposed on a broader bowl-shaped depression (12 m long by about 50 cm wide) with raised rims (up to 10 cm high) to either side of the central groove. We discuss the potential biological causes of these marks, and conclude that they are probably created by Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) during foraging dives to these depths. The mud volcanoes have a comparatively rich and diverse benthic ecology associated with methane-rich fluid seeps and thus could be the base of food chains that reach top predators like the deep-diving whales. The characteristic high acoustic backscatter of the mud volcanoes would facilitate their detection by the echolocation system of these whales.
