New paper: Preserving an Imperiled Porpoise Through Pixels: Digitization of a Vaquita (Phocoena sinus) Skeleton, the World's Most Endangered Marine Mammal

In this note, we describe the status of the vaquita population, details of a museum specimen that was collected in the 1960's, and the process to digitize the entire skeleton via 2D photographs, low-resolution CT scans, high-resolution micro-CT scans, and 3D meshes. The entire dataset is open access and available for viewing and download through MorphoSource - https://www.morphosource.org/projects/000681222?locale=en. We also offer recommendations for and highly encourage use of the dataset in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, research, conservation, education and outreach, and art. To our knowledge, the number of vaquita skeletal specimens in Mexican and U.S. collections outnumbers the remaining wild population by approximately 12:1. Considering the critically endangered status of the vaquita, it is crucial to digitally preserve this species. We hope that our open access dataset will support ongoing marine mammal science while also promoting awareness of biodiversity loss and inspiring further conservation efforts for the vaquita and other species facing extinction as the result of human impact.
