California Wildlife Center in Malibu is searching for a Seasonal Assistant Stranding Coordinator. The time frame for the position is mid-February to the end of August 2015. Qualifications: At least two years' direct experience in marine mammal rescue, BA/BS or higher degree (preferably in a biological science), excellent public relations and human resources skills, commitment to professionalism in animal welfare. Basic Function: To be responsive to the local community and visitors from around the world in performing all of the duties necessary to rescue stranded marine mammals anywhere along the 27-miles of the City of Malibu's coastline, and transport them to either California Wildlife Center's Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Facility, or other local marine mammal rehabilitation facilities. Provide support to Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Team staff. Must be able to provide proper animal assessment, tracking, dispatch, capture and handling, stabilization, and transport. Provide public education about the natural history of marine mammals and the provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Collect data on Malibu strandings including location, cause, and outcome. Primary Duties: Answer and respond to all reports of marine mammals in a timely and courteous manner. Assess stranded marine mammals as soon as possible. Utilize a tracking system for animals placed on watch. Coordinate and lead responder teams in the capture and handling of stranded marine mammals needing medical attention. Coordinate transport of stranded marine mammals to rehabilitation facilities. Provide volunteer training in marine mammal assessment and rescue. Collect data on all live- and dead-stranded marine mammals. Provide support to Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Team staff when not actively responding to reports of stranded marine mammals. Compensation: This is a seasonal position beginning in mid-February and ending in August 2015. The position is part-time approximately 30 hours per week. Rate of pay is commensurate with experience.
