JOB DESCRIPTION Serves as the FWRI manatee mortality database curator. Collects, enters, manages and maintains and assures quality control, of official documentation of manatee mortality and morphometrics. Conducts analyses in response to external requests for information and in alignment with strategic research plans. Work includes preparing final necropsy reports for each necropsied carcass case, timely updates including verification and editing of the manatee mortality database and preparing monthly and weekly mortality reports for their timely distribution. Reports and data submitted via internet will be downloaded, reviewed and appended as appropriate to the FWC mortality database. Secures and manages reliable mortality data archives. Maintains metadata documentation. Works closely with scientific and technical staff to assist in the maintenance and continued development of key databases. Answer inquiries about manatee mortality data from agencies, public, and media. Maintains a professional working environment that promotes teamwork. Recovery and necropsy of manatees and other marine mammals. Duties to include recovery of carcasses, cross-state transportation, complete carcass measurements, photo documentation of carcass and special lesions, preparation and labeling of sample containers, carcass disposal, and cleansing of equipment and instruments. Participate in manatee rescue operations including capture and transportation of injured manatees, coordination of communications, and vessel operation. Serves in on-call status between 8am and 5pm on weekends and holidays in rotation with other MMPL staff members for the purpose of responding to manatee emergencies as needed or assigned. Participate in outreach efforts where appropriate. Required entry level knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position: Knowledge and skills using Microsoft Office, ArcGIS and database software. Understanding of marine mammal biology and pathology; anatomical and medical language; methods of data collection. Ability to conduct marine mammal necropsies and generate necropsy reports. Ability to collect, manage and process large amounts of data in Microsoft Access. Ability to create and edit Access Queries, Forms and Macros. Ability to prepare written technical reports. Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences. Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
