The Meeting

The Northwest Student Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy (NWSSMM) meets annually so that students in the region can exchange ideas and feedback on their research projects and foster a sense of community.  This year’s meeting is being held in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle on 1 May 2010.  If you’re a student in the region, regardless of the stage of your research project or studies, you can contribute to and are welcome at this meeting!

This year’s meeting will begin with a plenary address by Dr. Marla Holt of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, who will talk to us about her work on marine mammal acoustics, as well as offering a few words of professional and technical advice.  The rest of the meeting will be student presentations of 15-20 minutes, which can be in the form of a research proposal, a progress report, completed thesis/dissertation work, or a side project.  In any case, we are interested to hear what you are doing!

Logistics and Registration

Graduates or undergraduates, presenters or attendees – all are welcome! The registration form for the meeting is available on-line at <http://tinyurl.com/ybz75mn>.  Please fill it out electronically and return it to <alb992@u.washington.edu> by 20 April 2010.  The sooner you register, the better!

The registration fee for the meeting is nominal, covering only the cost of breakfast, lunch, and snack items for participants.  The exact amount depends on the number of people that register, but as in past years, is expected to be less than $20.

For those of you traveling long distances to join us, we can arrange free accommodation with local students if you want to come down the evening before the meeting or stay the night after.  Make sure to indicate your plans in the registration form.

The meeting will be followed by an optional group dinner at a local restaurant.  Let us know on the registration form if you’d like to attend.
