Duties:
The Scientific Program Director has overall responsibility for developing and managing the Marine Mammal Commission's program of research; coordinating Commission research projects with relevant research projects of other agencies and organizations;
collecting and evaluating materials related to the systematics, status, conservation, and ecology of marine mammals; reviewing and evaluating reports and documents to ensure the incorporation of an ecosystem approach; the annual compiling of a summary of all
national marine mammal research activities; developing comments and recommendations to other agencies on the potential impact of federal activities upon marine mammals; and making known, through lectures and less formal briefings, the scientific thrust of
the Commission's work both domestically and internationally. Typical work assignments will include:

Manages Marine Mammal Commission research program

Develops annual and long-range scientific plans and budgets for the Marine Mammal Commission research program

Oversees the Commission's annual research grant program and survey of federally funded research

Represents the Commission on appropriate domestic and international scientific committees

Reviews and evaluates reports and documents including environmental impact statements and marine mammal stock assessments so as to clearly incorporate the best available science into marine mammal management and policies.
About the Marine Mammal Commission:
The Marine Mammal Commission is the U.S Government agency that provides independent, science-based oversight of domestic and international policies and actions of federal agencies addressing human impacts on marine mammals and their ecosystems.
Our mission is largely driven by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The MMPA was enacted in October 1972 in partial response to growing concerns among scientists and the general public that certain species and populations of marine mammals were in danger
of extinction or depletion as a result of human activities. The MMPA set forth a national policy to prevent marine mammal species and population stocks from diminishing beyond the point at which they cease to be significant functioning elements of the ecosystems
of which they are a part.
The Marine Mammal Commission has oversight responsibility for all national research programs and projects related to marine mammals, responsibility for the funding and management of its own research program and projects, and responsibility
to comment and make recommendations on the general thrust and direction of all federally-supported marine mammal research activities. It is also responsible for making recommendations with respect to all Federal agency actions, be they scientific or otherwise
that affect marine mammals.
