Dolphins Plus is now accepting applications for the position of " Education Associate". This 3-month, paid, seasonal position will run mid May 2016 - mid August 2016. Pay will be $1500/month (no benefits).
Dolphins Plus, located
in Key Largo, is a pair of marine mammal zoological facilities committed to
the conservation and protection of marine mammals worldwide through our
active involvement in research, extensive education and outreach
programs, involvement with and support of local marine mammal stranding
organizations, and powerful, daily interactions with the general public. We are an active
member of the research community through the submission of peer-reviewed
publications, participation at national and international scientific
conferences, and the support of undergraduate and graduate research projects
and applied scientific training. Dolphins Plus also has an extensive
education program designed to promote a greater understanding of marine
science, marine mammal and ecosystem conservation, and environmental
stewardship. These programs include a broad range of classes,
including activities and lesson plans designed for children, continuing
education programs for Florida teachers, career guidance workshops, and
university level (undergraduate and graduate) coursework and
instruction.
The primary responsibility of the Education
Associate is to assist the Assistant Director and Director of Education with
the education programs at Dolphins Plus, including but not limited to: curriculum/program development, all summer
camp programs, and visiting school groups. The Education Associate should
have a strong passion for education and working with children of all ages, as
well as adults and teachers. The Education Associate should also have
some experience with teaching, including practical training, excellent communication
and time management skills, some familiarity with the Sunshine State Standards,
a strong proficiency in the use of educational tools and software (e.g.
PowerPoint and Microsoft Word), and a sense of creativity. Preference will be given to candidates who
possess current first aid and CPR certifications.
Basic Requirements/Qualifications:
- Candidates must –
- 1) Be at least 21 years of age.
- 2) Have completed at least 1 semester of graduate
level coursework.
- 3) Be available for a minimum of 3 months
(40-hour/week) (+/- weekends, emergencies).
- 4) Pass a Level 2 background check.
- The Education Associate must be capable of maintaining
financial stability throughout the duration of the position, including the
cost of housing (including utilities), transportation, meals, travel, and
personal expenses. Dolphins Plus does not provide housing. However, our
staff is available to assist in identifying affordable housing in close
proximity to Dolphins Plus.
- Candidates must have strong swimming skills, must be
able to withstand long periods of time outdoors in warm conditions (~
85°-95°F), and should be physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
