Integrated Statistics is looking for an Acoustician to work with
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National
Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center
(NEFSC). The position supports the Protected Species Branch's
Passive Acoustics group. The Passive Acoustics group conducts
research in the Atlantic Ocean, using innovative passive acoustic
technologies to evaluate the impacts of various human-produced
sounds on acoustically sensitive marine animals, to aid in
management, monitoring, and conservation efforts.
The Acoustician will be engaged in analyzing high frequency
odontocete clicks and/or baleen whale sounds, with involvement in
two projects:
- Odontocetes: the deployment and analysis of mid frequency
recorders and CPOD/FPODs throughout the Northeastern US to
monitor for the presence of odontocetes across a number of
habitats.
- Minke whales: coordinating the analyses of minke whale
detections in different data sets across the Atlantic.
Both projects involve participating in fieldwork to deploy
acoustic recorders, organizing fieldwork logistics, running
detectors and extracting detection information, writing reports
when needed, and dissemination of data via scientific publications
and presentations at conferences.
Qualifications
- A MSc or PhD in marine mammalogy, or a closely related field
of study.
- Demonstrated experience in analyzing acoustic data and
generating reports/manuscripts.
- Ability to assist with planning of fieldwork, and willingness
to participate in fieldwork at sea.
- Track record of success working collaboratively with a large
group on multifaceted projects.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and
demonstrated organizational/logistical skills.
- US citizenship or green card.
- Prior knowledge of CPOD/FPOD software is preferred.
- Experience with a programming language such as R or Matlab is
preferred.
The position may begin with a period of remote work to accommodate
COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, but will be on-site in Woods Hole,
MA after that. The period of performance is expected to be 12
months. The position is expected to be full-time, and the rate of
pay will be commensurate with experience. The position is eligible
