Position Description:
The Marine Turtle Research Program at
NOAA-Southwest
Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) La Jolla, CA,
seeks to
contract a database manager/data analyst to manage database systems and
assist
senior researchers with data analysis.
The Program generates genetic data and collects a wide range of
biological data, including morphological, line-transect,
mark-recapture, stable
isotope, satellite telemetry, oceanographic, behavioral, and acoustic
tracking. Databases have been developed
using MS SQL Server with MS Access front ends.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the upkeep of
these
databases as well as providing assistance to scientists to organize and
analyze
data. He/she will work under the
supervision of a senior-level scientist of the program and a
senior-level data
manager of the Information Technology Services program at SWFSC. He/she will interact with scientists, IT
personnel, and laboratory technicians.
This position requires a person who is organized,
detail-oriented,
self-motivated, and be able to communicate technical materials with
others. Although this is a one-year contract,
it will
be renewed subject to available funding.
Responsibilities:
- Analyzes and defines database
requirements and specifications
- Performs relational database modeling,
design, and prototyping
- Integrates the Programs’ various data
sets in to a unified Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)
- Administers database to ensure
integrity, accessibility, and confidentiality
- Trains staff on database access,
functionality, and usage
- Writes system, metadata, and end user
documentation
- Ensures database backup and recovery
procedures are in place
- Develops database utilities, scripts,
and applications as needed
- Provides web based access to various
aspects of the database
- Coordinates with Information
Technology Services staff to ensure the system is in compliance with
agency security and software standards
- Writes purpose-build computer programs
to assist data analyses
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Experience in RDBMS design,
development, and management
- Entity relationship and process flow
diagramming
- Fluent in SQL Data Definition Language
and Data Manipulation Language
- Strong background in working with MS
SQL Server and MS Access
- Thorough knowledge of Windows XP, MS
Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
- Fluent in programming with VisualBasic
- Knowledge of programming in Matlab
(preferable) or R and Perl
- Knowledge of statistical analysis and
modeling
- Clear verbal and written communication
skills
Salary: $45,365
