Job posting:  AI specialist in image recognition and remote sensing

We are looking for a specialist in the field of image recognition and deep learning to optimise the existing process of our service "SPACEWHALE".

We offer a full-time position (40 hrs/week) starting as soon as possible, preferably in January 2024.

BioConsult SH is based in Husum on the North Sea. It is a team of natural scientists that comprises as an independent, ecological research and consulting office since 1998. Based on qualified scientific work, we prepare environmental reports, groundwork for conservation concepts and feasibility studies with the aim to find solutions to conflicts between human and nature.

Large marine mammals are traditionally surveyed using ships or aircraft. However, both platforms have drawbacks specifically regarding accessibility to remote locations, and safety. Very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery has become increasingly more accessible at sub-meter resolutions, opening up the possibility of detecting large cetaceans. We have a running service called “SPACEWHALE” which semi-automatically detects whales (the AI marks all potential whale observations followed by a human review team that confirms it is indeed a whale and determines the species). We have been working in a number of projects to provide the abundance and distribution of whales.

BioConsult SH is searching for an image recognition specialist to optimize the existing process and to keep ahead of the latest developments in the field of deep learning. These processes are not only meant to be applied in the space based earth observation but also in the remote sensing fields of digital aerial surveys and drone-based aerial surveys.

Basic requirements for this work are an ability to work structured and independently, enjoy engaging in interdisciplinary exchange with biologists to merge the ideas.

We expect from you:

Duties:

• Optimizing the existing semi-automated process
• Integrating code with cloud-based VHR satellite platform
• Debugging process code
• Synthetic images for AI-training: using Sim-to-real transfer technique to bridge the gap between simulations (sim) and the real world (real)
• Earth observation Space Technology
• Not a must, but if available, handling LIDAR and RADAR data
• Image & Video Analysis

Minimum qualifications:

• MSc Computer Science with focus on AI and Computer vision
• Strong background in earth observation satellite image analysis and remote sensing
• Experience with image annotation software/ solutions
• Expertise in applying Computer Vision
• Expertise applying deep learning and artificial intelligence methods
• Experience in working with large data files
• Fluent in Python (experience with Pytorch, Keras, and/or TensorFlow)
• Experience working in Linux
