Hi all,

Right now both days of the Digital Techniques workshop are entirely filled, but I may be able to get a extra room for day 2 (28 Nov), the hands on workshops and demos day.

If there’s enough interest, I can get all the wait-listed people into the workshop and open it up for additional folks.  The workshop cost is $30 in advance (through PayPal) or R200 at the door

If you’d like to participate in Day 2 and haven’t e-mailed me yet, please get back to me as soon as possible, or by Monday (12 Nov) at the latest.

You can find the workshop schedule at the link below and at the end of this e-mail.

DIGITS: Software to Process, Match and Track Digital Images and Data for Individual Identification Studies

Description:  The DIGITS software (Digital Image Gathering and Information Tracking System) will be demonstrated

Finscan as a Tool to Match Dolphin Dorsal Fin Images

Description:  The computer software Finscan operates in conjunction with Microsoft Access to match dolphin dorsal fin images according to the pattern of nicks and notches found on the fin edge.  Participants will work with an existing database of dusky dolphin fins to learn the steps involved in setting up a Finscan database, tracing fin images, and matching fin images.  Participants will also look at examples of individual dolphins which have been photographically tracked since 1998.

Photo-ID and Digital Database Integration:  Integrating Digital Still, GPS and Whale Biopsy Data into a Field Database

Description:  The integrated use of 3 simple software programs (photo EXIF editing, database and GPS capture) improves the accuracy of field data collection and streamlines the analysis of whale biopsy and photo-identification data.  Participants will work with real data (their own or a teaching set provided) to learn how to quickly label photo-ID photos and import the photo data directly into a database that they build themselves during the workshop session.  See this link for step by step instructions: http://sally.mizroch.googlepages.com/NMMLDigitalPhotoProtocol.pdf

FlukeFinder:  A Do-it-Yourself Categorical Photo-ID Matching Database

Description:  FlukeFinder, the new digital version of the humpback whale matching system that researchers at the National Marine Mammal Laboratory have been using for over 20 years, is very simple to build, use and modify.  Matching examples will be presented from the database of 29,000 images (9,000 digitized images so far) dating back to the late 1960s, showing both long-term matches (e.g. a whale first photographed in 1972 was seen as recently as June 2007) and matches to poor and partial photos.

Non-invasive tracking with Pocket PC Designing and Building a Non-invasive Tracking System

Description A step-by-step description of the design, construction and use of WhaleTrack – a practical standards-based system using Pocket PC, GPS and Bluetooth wireless technologies.  Lessons learned.

GIS Visualization and Analysis   Visualizing and Analysing Data Using a Geographic Information System (GIS)

Description GIS affords insights unobtainable with databases and spreadsheets. Step-by-step guide to creating and publishing interactive maps and animations from your data using ArcMap, with hands-on lab using real-life data. [If bringing a laptop contact convener to pre-install software.]
