Some highlights of this work are that dolphins and sperm whales actively interact with marine debris, with sightings registered from a variety of locations around the world and eleven species identified exhibiting this playful behaviour; single-use plastics are the main category of litter observed, indicating that more policies and awareness are needed to reduce SUPs in the environment; the study refers to play with plastics of considerable size or with openings as a potential key in subsequent entanglements; these playful interactions might also be a cause of plastic ingestion in these marine mammals.
