Please pass on the announcement to interested candidates that are looking for a position in passive acoustics, noise modeling, fish acoustics, and/or bottlenose dolphin population monitoring. The position is an interesting mix of programming and field work.

“The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) Marine Sensory and Neurobiology Lab and the Lowcountry Dolphin Conservation Program (Supervisor Dr. Eric Montie) will soon post a position to hire a motivated Research Technician to join our Team. The Research Technician will (i) assist a Team of scientists to measure underwater-radiated noise (URN) levels of vessels in shallow coastal oceans; (ii) help with population studies of bottlenose dolphins in the estuaries of Beaufort-Bluffton-Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA; and (iii) assist with our Estuarine Soundscape Observatory Network in SC (ESONS). Duties include reviewing passive acoustic datasets using Adobe Audition to identify sound-producing fish, marine mammals, and vessels; analyzing these datasets using MATLAB or R; operating small research vessels (16 – 21 feet) during dolphin surveys; boat and trailer cleaning/maintenance; routinely checking safety gear; lifting and deploying heavy scientific equipment; transporting vessels for maintenance; washing field trucks; and cleaning field bay. The position is from 5/15/2023 to 5/14/2024, with a possible extension pending funding and performance. The position is 40 hours/week at $20.00 per hour, which equates to a yearly salary of approximately $41,600. Health insurance is included and employees may elect to participate in the SC Retirement System. Qualified candidates must have a MS in Biology, Marine Biology, Computational Science, or related degree; demonstrate programming experience in MATLAB or R applicable to analyzing acoustic datasets; and experience working on small research vessels or an OUPV/Six-pack Captain’s License.
