SUMMER INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT: June 1st – July 1st, 2018
Filicudi WildLife
Conservation is a non-profit association involved in the research and
conservation of cetacean species (bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin and sperm
whale) and the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta
caretta) in the Aeolian Archipelago (Southern Thyrrenian Sea, Italy). Filicudi
WildLife Conservation also manage a First Aid for Sea Turtles (Turtle Point
Filicudi) located in Filicudi island for the rescue and care of individuals found
with problems in the Aeolian area. During summer Filicudi WildLife Conservation
organize research camps for students and volunteers to participate at the
monitoring sessions for different research projects on cetaceans and sea

In addition, in this period, naturalistic excursion, snorkeling and educational
activities are performed with the tourists in the area (http://www.filicudiconservation.com/index.php?en/203/boat-tours-walking-and-trekking).
In the Turtle Point, an educational area to provide information on the marine
biology and nature of the islands is also open to the public.
The Filicudi
WildLife Conservation Team is seeking 2 applicants for internships working
primarily with environmental and education projects and office assistant at the
First Aid for Sea Turtle in Filicudi island (Italy). These positions are unpaid
and applicants are responsible for their travel and food expenses but accommodation
is provided.
The start date for
the Summer Internship period is June 1st, with a target end date of July
1st. There is some flexibility on the starting and end dates of
internships, but priority will be given to interns that may stay for 1 month.
Intern Responsibilities &
Qualifications:
The internship is
open to all applicants 21 years of age or older, with an avid interest in
marine biology, zoology, general biology, policy or a related field. If the
intern intends to receive university credit for their internship, they are
responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institution.
Interns must be able to work for 1 month, 7 days a week, at least 40 hours per
week. Work schedule must be flexible and may include free days for enjoying
the island. This is an unpaid position and all interns are responsible for
obtaining transportation. Applicants should demonstrate excellent
communication skills (Italian and English required) and have practical computer
knowledge with programs such as Word, Access, and Excel. Diving and Boat license
are not mandatory for this position but priority will be given to more
experienced applicants. This internship position involves a fair amount of hard
physical activity, such as moving sea turtle from a tank to another,
consequently priority will be given to strongly motivated applicants.
Internship Opportunities
The Filicudi
WildLife Conservation Team Internship is an exciting opportunity for
individuals who are interested in increasing their experience and knowledge on dolphins
and sea turtles conservation projects and the Rescue of sea turtles.
Interns will be
responsible for answering service, office assistant, environmental education in
the Turtle Point and naturalistic excursions by boat and along the paths of the
island. Interns will also coordinate the Turtle Point Filicudi and
educational activities on dolphins and sea turtles with tourists. Interns will have the opportunity to
participate in monitoring session by boat, sea turtles rescues, releases and other field activity of the
association. In addition, interns will be required to assist with sea turtles
care duties (food preparations, cleaning tanks, water change, medical treatments). Other
duties may include: participation in training classes, data entry and tracking
and maintaining research equipment.
