The webmaster is responsible for keeping the SMM Web site http://www.marinemammalscience.org/running efficiently and securely.

This paid position is part-time: approximately 3 hours per week on average in non-conference years but up to 20 hours per week in peak periods associated with the Biennial Conference (typically occurring in the fourth quarter of odd-numbered years). The position will be required from January 2014 and it is hoped that the successful applicant would be available to attend the Biennial meeting in Dunedin December 2013 to meet with the Board of the Society. The Board will be meeting both before and after the meeting on December 7, 8, and 14 and the meeting can be scheduled on any of those days.

• Project management skills
• Capacity to advise Board on the most appropriate and cost effective software to meet the Society's evolving needs
• HTML, CSS, PHP scripting language and mySQL database architecture
• Joomla content management system and its associated database structure including capacity to migrate or oversee the migration of Joomla version 1.5.x to version 1.6.x
• GoDaddy domain and hosting platform
• PayPal Pro merchant services for e-commerce, including Instant Payment Notification, and writing custom transaction scripts
• Basic photo editing skills
• Integration of Web and social media technology
• Excellent writing and communication skills.

• Interest in marine mammal science and conservation
• Familiarity with the VerticalResponse email marketing service
• Capacity to attend annual Board meetings in the US and overseas, including the meeting in Dunedin, New Zealand in December 2013.

• monitoring the Trusted Proxy Server connection to Wiley Publishers and acting as technical contact for Wiley technical staff
• acting as e-commerce technician for the Web site to insure membership sales, donations and other transactions are running smoothly and securely
• maintaining a special Web interface for the Scientific Committee for review of grant proposals
• maintaining a special Web interface for the Education Committee to add and maintain species "fact sheets"
• integrating the Web site with social media (Facebook, Twitter);
• maintaining a special member-only area that only active (current, paid) members can access;
• setting up online voting for members using Google Forms and limit votes to one per member using PHP programming;
• supporting the Membership Chair in providing customer service to members who inquire about membership status or online payments;
• ensuring the member directory is updated;
• ensuring member account management functionality is running smoothly (updating of name, mailing address, password, etc);
• helping Board members post content updates to the various sections of the Web site, including text and photo content;
• setting up email forwarding accounts as needed;
• providing student chapter representatives access permissions to edit their own "chapter" pages;
• refreshing the homepage slideshow and messaging on an annual basis;
• providing Web site visitor traffic reports for annual Board meetings.

• assisting the conference organising committee to handle the data bases for abstract submission and registration;
• migrating a database-driven application during the Joomla migration of the overarching Web site . During conference years, this large application is used for abstract submission and scoring as well as generating a program schedule and abstract book. The application is currently integrated into the main Web site and written in PHP; data are stored in dedicated associated mySQL databases.
