Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,501/Mon. DUTIES: Coordinates logistical operations for monk seal research and recovery activities primarily in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). This includes packing and preparation of research/enhancement gear and equipment, organizing transportation and travel arrangements, coordinating personnel, and cleaning and maintaining gear, supplies, and equipment after field operations. Responsible for the maintenance of Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program (HMSRP) small boats and in the maintenance and cleaning of the monk seal component of the live animal Life Support System (LSS). Conducts and assists HMSRP project staff in field activities for research and emergency response in the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) or in remote field camps in the NWHI (i.e., capturing and handling monk seals for research, health/disease assessment, flipper tagging, intervention and moving live animals, equipment, and gear). Trains staff and partners on the proper protocols for handling monk seals. Analyzes data collected and drafts reports for special research projects conducted in the MHI. Collects monk seal census and life history data, processes field data, and assists with data entry. Coordinates and collaborates on monk seal-fisheries interaction projects. Assists with Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operations for population assessment and emergency response of monk seals. Works with other program staff on special research projects. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Biology, Fisheries Oceanography, or other related field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience as a biological technician or other related experience, which includes capturing, tagging, and restraining Hawaiian monk seals or other species. One to three (1-3) years of experience in logistical operations for field research and equipment. Experience with data entry. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of personal computers including use of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Knowledge of hazardous material safety. Working knowledge of small boat operation and maintenance. Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Able to operate small boats. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain a forklift operator’s certification within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Shipper Training certification within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be NOAA certified for small boat operations (having completed Motorboat Operators Certification Course (MOCC) and NOAA small boat component training) (or be able to obtain the certification following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to pass all training requirements, including, but not limited to advanced coxswain training. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry equipment and gear up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Must be able to swim. Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods of time. Must be able to work long hours in the sun. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain throughout duration of employment. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience with marine mammal husbandry and/or veterinary care.
