Dear Marmam and ECS members,
Drones have given us the possibility to observe and record
cetaceans from above in a way that we could not even dream before.
An example is shown in a video that we wish to share with you
regarding sperm whale behaviour within the framework of a social
unit.
In a 3 min video with aerial views of one social unit gathered at
surface, you can observe what provoked the tail-slapping behaviour
of a presumably immature male. When we were observing it from our
vessel we had no explanation, since we could see almost nothing of
what is visible from above.
The video is available at the following Youtube link:
or in our Youtube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVyp-eiteK0GBb0Lr5psk0g
You can freely share the video.
Any comments you may have regarding the observed behaviour are
very welcome.
Best wishes,
Alexandros
