The Greenland Climate Research Centre (GCRC) at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Arctic bioacoustics and soundscape ecology, with responsibilities in the Arctic Acoustic Observation Network (AAON) under CBMP/Arctic Council (Marine Mammals Expert Network | CAFF).

The position is a one-year postdoc, with the possibility of extension, and will be based in Nuuk, Greenland. Research stays at AAON partner institutions are encouraged.

GCRC is responsible for several long-term programmes monitoring physical and biological parameters in marine and fjord systems in Greenland and across the Arctic. The centre develops and offers educational programmes and provides research-based advice to authorities in Greenland and Denmark. Increasing anthropogenic activity in the Arctic has made underwater noise a key parameter for understanding ecosystem change and cumulative impacts on marine fauna. The successful candidate will play a central role in coordinating and further developing AAON, and in conducting pan-Arctic analyses of underwater sound and its relationships to marine animals and ecosystems. The candidate will collaborate closely with an international network of researchers working on marine bioacoustics, oceanography, ecology, and Arctic observing systems.

Areas of responsibility

The candidate will be expected to:

assist coordination and contribute scientifically to the Arctic Acoustic Observation Network (AAON)
analyse and interpret long-term and large-scale acoustic datasets from across the Arctic
conduct pan-Arctic analyses of soundscapes, anthropogenic noise, and animal acoustic

activity
publish scientific articles at an international level.

Educational qualifications

The selected candidate must hold a PhD in acoustics, bioacoustics.
In the assessment, particular emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s:

experience with analysis and handling of long-term acoustic data series
ability to work with large, heterogeneous, and multi-institutional datasets
scientific output at an international level
ability to work independently while contributing to international collaborations.

Salary and terms of employment

Salary and employment conditions, including entitlement to travel on appointment and termination as well as relocation of household goods, follow the agreement in force at the time of appointment between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organisation.

Housing

The Greenland Institute of Natural Resources will provide access to a rental accommodation.
