Hi everyone,

I’d like to make you aware of a funding opportunity of relevance to those working on marine mammal bycatch mitigation.

The Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC)’s Ocean Stewardship Fund is offering research funding to fisheries scientists and postgraduate students all over the world to carry out vital research that will help fisheries improve their sustainability.

Two types of grant are available:

The Science and Research Fund (up to £50,000)

This fund is open to established researchers working with MSC certified fisheries, which have conditions they must meet ahead of their next MSC assessment in order to remain MSC certified. This year’s research priority is for proposals related to bycatch reduction.  This might include researching gear modifications, spatial closures, impact assessments or new research programs. Priority will be given to projects that aim to develop low-cost solutions and which have strong match funding in place.

The Student Research Grants (up to £5,000)

This fund is open to current Masters or PhD students of fisheries science worldwide. Integrated Masters students are eligible to apply during their final year only. Projects can be up to 12 months (or 18 in exceptional circumstances) and must have the objective of studying some aspect of environmental improvement, performance or best practice in relation to a specific fishery and the MSC Fisheries Standard.
